I just received the latest copy of the GW Hatchet and found out why the ED deadline has been extended. It is actually because the number of ED applications has risen from 946 last year to more than 1,200 so far this year. This is also more than the 2006 number of 1,009. The ED deadline has therefore been pushed back "to attract even more prospective students to apply early...to give high schoolers more time to learn about the University's financial policies, including a fixed-tuition plan and bolstered financial aid resources. GW has already seen a 30 percent increase in Early Decision I applications compared to last year." The article went on to state that even though the financial melt-down has made people nervous, they are even more nervous about this year's large, competitive applicant pool and want to secure their place at GW.

Ahh, I was gonna post this, as there was a thread on here where people said the ED was actually at an al0time low and that's why they had to extend the deadline. This is good news for us GW students!

I think anyone who holds GW as their number 1 choice and can swing it financially should seriously consider taking advantage of the extension to file an early application. It seems with such an increase in ED applications there may not be as many spaces available in the regular decision round.

Well, their RD admissions were always slightly more selective than their ED.

Could the rise in ED applicants be due to the fact that the only way to wiggle out of an ED decision is via lack of financial means? Maybe the kids are applying with the thought that it will give them some leverage with admissions and then, if they can't afford it, they can always get out of it?

Just a thought.

About RD vs ED: The 37% advertised acceptance rate is actually an average of ED and RD. Apparently last year ED acceptance was around 60% so RD acceptance is 15%...

Am I making a mistake waiting and applying ED II. That deadline is 1/10.

According to its Common Data Set, RD acceptances were at a rate of 37%, not 15%.

And yes, ED acceptance rate is @60% -- so, clearly, one has better odds applying via ED; doesn't matter if it's EDI or EDII -- they know they have your $ either way.

If you really want to go there, like me, then those numbers sound great for ED II. But you're right, the money is still an issue

I applied ED I before the first ED deadline of November 10th. I'm wondering now-- since they extended the deadline, will I have to wait longer than December 15th to get my letter?

i was wondering the same thing

Nope , I talked to admissions today and he said that no matter when you sent your ED stuff in , you will hear back Dec.15th . AHHHHH , I want to know so badly !!!
