Why did GW extend the ED deadline to Nov. 29?

Anyone have an answer or any ideas? Is it possible that applications to GW have dropped because of the economy?

It is possible, but it doesn't mean they'll be less selective, it means they just may have less applicants although same quality students, that's all.

well less applicants will prob mean less selective, actually. i dont really understand your logic multitasker. less applicants + same amt. of spots = less selective

Does anyone else find this info very interesting given that 2009 was supposed to be the year of the largest # of seniors graduating? Maybe the "bubble of college tuition" is bout to burst.....?

If you've been reading the other threads on the parents section and the newspapers, you'll see that the financial melt-down has affected the number of people applying ED to schools across the board, not just GW. Many people do not want to lock in through an ED plan at any school since they are feeling insecure financially, have lost money in the stock market and don't know what the future holds. More people are applying RD to keep their financial options open. GW will probably accept the same PERCENTAGE ED as usual. Shouldn't affect selectivity, just the percentage of the class that is ED vs. RD.

GrreDayFan: What I meant was not necessarily less students applying meant less qualifies, since the expectations GW has for the prospective students will not decrease. Last yr, and avg of 20K or so students applied, and 2000 Freshmen got in ( without counting the transfers, etc) If 10000 students with the same or better qualifications apply , still 2000 students will get in, just greater chances. However, I have to agree 100 percent with Researcheaven, for I didn't think of it, and it makes a lot of sense.

When did they extend the deadline to Nov. 29th?

Well I learned that they extended the deadline because I recently changed the status of my application from RD to ED. Afther I did this, they sent me an e-mail confirming this and stating that the ED deadline had been extended to Nov. 29, without any appartent explanation why? Heres the E-MAIL.....

Dear John,
Thank you for your e-mail. Your application has been changed from Regular Decision to Early Decision I in to the Columbian College. Please note that the Early Decision I deadline has been moved back from November 10th to November 29th. This is a postmark deadline. Your GWid has also been provided below.

Thanks for the info -- don't see it posted on their website anywhere.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR EARLY DECISION!!

myoneandonly- Interesting that you are still requesting info on GW after your prior negative comments. Unbelievable! Good luck double J! It's a great place to attend.

MsBC: Don't bother with this mother. By the way, she has been pestering other sites. In fact, in the other sites she has admitted being a mother and not a prospective student, and after describing GW as a mediocre school, she is still interested in this university for her son. Very confusing.

They extended it because of an increase in applications and they want to give people more time before commiting in these hard economic times. Here's the proof...

Early decision applications rise - News

MMoral: I am so happy to have read that in the Hatchet! It proves that extremely qualified students still are interested and applying to GW. Thank you guys for posting the info!

Actually someone may have written this already but the news is that they have gotten over 1250 applications for ED I so far and in an effort to draw and encourage even more high caliber students they have extended it a few more weeks...numbers are nearly 30% up which is huge for any school but particularly noteworthy given our shaky economy!

Indeedo...

Just verifies what we've been saying, great school that many hope to attend.
So much for mediocrity!!!!!!!!

Mre applications could also be due to the fact that Princeton Review rated GW as one of the top 20 schools with the happiest students in their latest book.

Number 20 exactly

So am I making a mistake waiting until the ED II deadline of 1/10?

yeah im wondering about that too!
