hooks:
- asian american female
- brother attends school
- i hear dmouth looks for liberal students because it wants to be like the other ivys..is that true? then i'd have a better chance with my anti-bias work and such.

solid stuff. being asian will hurt a little bit, and on paper you sort of look like one of those soulless asian overachievers. but if the recs and the essay are unique, chances improve.

not that they were bad in the first place

You look really good, especially since your brother is there, unless you’re not top 10%.

I don’t know if you can count any of those as hooks. Maybe the brother thing, but I don’t think D favors liberals (not that it isn’t a good EC) … Asian-American and female (slightly) will both be liabilities.
That said, you do have a decent shot.

A 3.85 unweighted is an A average, isn’t it? I don’t see how that is going to hurt you. Do you have any idea of your class rank? If your school doesn’t officially rank, do you have any idea how you will look on your School Profile GPA range?

Being an Asian-American female is not a hook.

Higher SATs are always helpful although yours are probably fine already. Did you take the exams for the APs you’ve done so far?

Are you applying ED?

yes, a 3.85 is an A, but there are a lot of people who apply who have much higher gpas. i know that i’m in the top 10 percent, but our school just doesn’t have rankings. i’m also taking the most rigorous classes in school.

i’m applying early decision!

and i have taken the ap exams, but my scores weren’t stellar.

i’m really hoping my recs will help me…so that i don’t look like a boring asian overachiever. most people think i’m different from the other asians in school because i’m not a math or science person at all…i’m only interested in the arts and human rights issues :]

my cousin also attends the school, which may help me

That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Who told you that?

i actually know a dartmouth interviewer, and that’s what he told me…

Don’t worry too much. No matter what others say, they don’t personally know you well. I do understand applying for ED is stressful and anxious, but asking others to measure your chance is often not very accurate. anyway, good luck!

I think you have a good shot, especially if you have outstanding recs and a good essay. Consider getting an extra rec from an advisor or teacher/coach, especially if you have a particularly good relationship with such a person.

When you say your AP scores are “not stellar,” what exactly do you mean?

By Dartmouth interviewer you mean a Dartmouth alumni interviewer?
