Does anyone know if the early action/early decision rules still apply to the service academies. For example, if I apply early decision to UNC, and get accepted into USNA, can I turn down UNC. I know I can't do this with other civilian schools, but does it work the same way with service academies?

Great question that I don't recall being addressed over the past few seasons. Purely speculation, but I'm guessing the question would be institution specific, i.e. you'd have to ask UNC ... or wherever you're applying. Someone'll know for sure here, I'm confident.

To the best of my knowledge, the college plan where you agree to attend if they admit you (can't recall if it's "action" or "decision") does apply to SAs. However, I would certainly check with the civilian college to which you're considering applying as there may be some exceptions. Also, there is some debate as to whether colleges can really enforce the commitment -- but that debate won't be resolved here. But if you agree to attend a civilian school if they admit you, be prepared to attend.

Early decision is considered, in most cases, as a binding contract between the applicant and the school. Most schools will let you out of the agreement if the financial packet is not agreeable- but each school is different. Having said that, how "binding" the "binding contract" is questionable- and open to interpretation, but the intent is that in opting for ED, you "agree" to attend if offered an acceptance. Thus- if a service academy is your first choice, it would be unwise to list another school as ED.

Early action, on the other hand, is certainly acceptable as it is non-binding on the part of the applicant, and does not prevent you from accepting an appointment to a service academy should an offer be made.

Thanks everyone!
