Early Decision I vs. II?

I applied to Cornell early decision I on November 1st. This thursday I will know whether or not I got in. I submitted my application to CMU on December 1st, in time for their Early Decision II deadline, and all of my materials were sent long in advance (SATs, recs, et cetera.)

If I don't get into Cornell, is there a way I can call up the admissions office at CMU and say, "Hey, can you put me into the ED II pile?" is that allowed?

It can't hurt to ask, I have no idea if it's allowed, but I don't see why it shouldn't be.

I'm guessing you get your Cornell decision on Monday, like all ED I students. CMU's ED II decisions are released on Jan. 15th. You could have signed the contract for both schools, (secretively), then if you got into Cornell, you can call up CMU and terminate your application. If you didn't, well then you still have CMU's ED II decision coming up.

is Jan 15th when everyones decision comes out or is that when everyones decision should be out?

jan 15th is only for EDII, regular decisions come sometime in march or april I believe. not sure for other schools, but if u apply regular, its most likely during march or april

Actually, Cornell's ED decision came out yesterday, the 11th. So I've been calling and emailing the admissions office. I'll do what I can!

Additionally, about that double-ED-contract thing-- I've heard if one school finds out you're doing that, you're immediately dropped from both schools' lists. This was from an article in the New York Times, I believe, though it was about a year ago so I could be erroneous.

Yeah, its a very risky, as mentioned in my previous post.

I meant for the people who applied EDII, if you applied EDII does everyones decision who applied EDII come out Jan 15th or is that the deadline, meaning people could've heard before then.

I know CMU sends letters out a few days before but doesn't post it online until three days after the 15th. They are generally consistent on posting decisions on that day, no earlier, no later.

So were you able to apply to CMU EDII even though you applied to Cornell ED?
I was planning on doing the same thing (apply Rice ED and CMU EDII), but I didn’t realize there was an issue since they’re technically different. How did that work out for you?

… Holy ****. Hi, three year old thread. Jeez that’s weird to see.

Well, in case you couldn’t tell, I’m now a very happy CMU student. And yes, it worked just fine. CMU was happy to accept my application to EDII (it was submitted ahead of the deadline under ‘regular decision’).
