Hi, I applied to Bates early decision round 1! Last week I got an email saying that I would hear by december 15th. Does this mean the notification will be online? Could I possibly hear earlier then the 15? I am very nervous! Also Is it a positive sign if a coach emailed me saying they got my information from admissions? I never contacted the coach so Im assuming this is a positive. I applied October 22nd and got the email from the coach last week… so Im assuming they already decided on me? Thank you!

Hi - check the thread on ED notification and Sue22’s answer. I’m not sure anyone here can say that the email from the coach is positive or not - I wouldn’t read anything into it other than the fact the coach received your file from admissions. My son received very positive feedback from the coach of his sport and ended up being deferred ED (he was ultimately accepted RD and is a very happy Bobcat). I don’t mean to discourage you and I know you’re on pins and needles. Hang in another couple of weeks and good luck!

Athletic recruiting starts much earlier, usually in the summer and the process involves the coach from the beginning. . I think it is a positive for you a coach is involved but it is not clear if you are being recruited or not. NESCAC schools have “bands” for athletes coaches are recruiting but NESCAC schools are not allowed to send “likely” letters like the Ivies can, so if they are recruiting athletes they do a pre-read of your transcript. That is about all you can expect in terms of assurance. In Division 1 you pretty much know if you are getting in if you get invited for an “Official Visit”. Division III schools like Bates can technically do “Official Visits” but they usually don’t. It sounds like you could have an ally with the coach. What I didn’t mention is that recruited athletes send their academic information early, once the junior year transcripts are completed and they have test scores. Most recruited athletes register with the NCAA as well.

May I ask why you never reached out to the coach in the summer or early fall?

Thank you! @Artie123 I didn’t reach out because I was unsure if I wanted to row in college and I discovered Bates in August! I am not being recruited but the coach has contacted me a lot. I was kind of figuring why would bates send my information when I was rejected? Hopefully accepted or at least deferred. I could be wrong, just trying to be optimistic! Before I got the email, bates called me school saying they were reviewing my application (I sent it in a month early). Then the coach contacted me. I’m probably reading to much into it. It’s just stressful! Thanks again!

I would ask the coach if he will be providing any assistance in admissions. I suggest you Google “NESCAC Recruiting Bands” and learn how the system works.

Okay thankyou! In the last email the coach asked for my academic history to help they find out where I might fall in the applicant pool.

Ask the Coach about how many “slots” he can use.

I should do this, even though acceptence letters come out in less than two weeks? @Artie123

@mchrup25,
Have you seen the plans for the new boathouse? It’s going to be beautiful!
<a href=“Bates to build new rowing boathouse on the Androscoggin River | News | Bates College”>Bates to build new rowing boathouse on the Androscoggin River | News | Bates College;
BTW, I have a rower and know multiple families who have kids who have rowed for Peter Steenstra, who coaches both the men’s and women’s crew teams. They have nothing but good things to say about him. The only knock I’ve heard on the Bates program was the lack of a boathouse with running water, and this new facility will certainly fix that.

@Sue22 yes I have! It looks beautiful! How does your kid feel about the commitment. Is it a huge commitment? Or can they manage it well with academics?

@mchrup25, Mine’s a current applicant, a high school rower. She’s decided not to look to the coach for support because of the same concerns it sounds like you have-she doesn’t want to accept a slot then decide the commitment is too much. Her brother’s there, so she’ll already get a legacy boost. She has friends with siblings who row for Bates and they all seem to love it and find rowing and keeping up with their studies manageable. A high percentage of Bates kids compete on interscholastic sports teams and Bates has organized the school’s academic schedule so that no classes take place during the normal sports practice time in the late afternoon. Bates takes both parts of the scholar-athlete package seriously.

Thank you @Sue22 ! I defiantly want to do something! I was debating between club ski team and crew! Good luck to your daughter! I heard they are shooting for a dec 13th online notification for early decision!

Any idea if we may receive the decisions before Dec 15?

No one can really tell, I will check the portal every hour starting from Saturday

The official word is that an email will go out announcing that the decisions will be on another portal the day following the email, not the one where you monitor the application documents. No confirmation on the timing.

I just received an email saying that my application decision will be out on the 15th… So so so so nervous… I’m praying to God now…

Yes we did too. Monday the 15th at 6:00 pm.

Is anyone else wicked nervous? I can’t wait for Monday!

Wicked nervous?? That is a nice way to say it!!!

:-) Wicked is such a New England term - I couldn’t figure it out when we first moved here. Good luck, everyone!
