Hey,
I’ve been thinking about applying early decision to uchicago, and I was wondering how helpful/hurtful doing that should be. Here are some abridged stats

Act 32
GPA 3.7/4.0(weighted)
AP classes
Both calc(5)
Comp sci A(5)
Physics 2(5)
Both physics C(5)
Chem (4)
Human Geo(not taken)
Music theory (not taken)
Bio (not taken)
Latin(not taken)
Some awards
Various national Latin exam awards
Various band awards
Flute award with teacher
Extracurriculars
Very involved in flute (expected to be selected for prestigious band in time for RD but not ED)
Quiz bowl
Chess club
Notable class
Self study on complex analysis (this year, will be on transcript, but no grade in time for RD obviously)
Multivariable calc
Other:
College counselor suggested taking sat again to improve my reading score(so likely improved score and superscore)
Taking act next week(same as above)
Taking subject tests in math ii and physics tomorrow (I expect very high scores)
If more info is needed, I can elaborate. Thanks for help!
Are you and your parents completely comfortable being full pay at Chicago? Have you run the NPC?
What does it mean to have a GPA of 3.7 out of 4.0 weighted? Where I am from if you have taken any AP or honors classes, 4.0 is not the maximum score. Thus I don’t know how to interpret this GPA.
My parents are both willing and able to pay for the cost (my sister also went there and they have said that they’ll be able to pay). The finances are no barrier to me(thanks Mom and Dad!)
Our college counselors said to put it on a 4.0 scale (if That means something else than the fraction, then sorry for notation). As I understand it, GPA can go above that score only with AP/honors classes. Beyond that, I’m trusting the college counselors.
ED I/II are by far the statistically highest possibilities for acceptance, as RD is in the low single digits. You should be competitive overall, so work on your essays to differentiate. Good luck.
With an 8% overall acceptance rate, what exactly is “likely”? ED/EDII might have higher odds but no one knows what those are going to be this upcoming year.
Apply ED if UChicago is your clear first choice and you know that finances are not going to dictate your decision to attend. Otherwise, apply non-binding.
