Early Decision

What are the rules for ED? Can you do ED for more than 1 school? Or is it just one and you have to Take it if the accept you?

You can use early decision for one school. The positive is that the acceptance rate is generally higher. The negative is you MUST go there if accepted. So it must be your dream school and bonafide first pick.

What of the financial aid package isn’t acceptable? You still don’t find out about financial aid till later correct?

There is still an out if you are admitted under ED if the finances do not allow you to attend. However you won’t have other offers to compare it with. If you need to compare FA offers it’s best not to use ED.

So if you do ED for a school, you can’t do regular admissions for other schools in case the aid isn’t good enough?

only if it is binding EA

wlammii is incorrect (there’s no such thing as binding EA – there is restrictive EA but that’s completely different). If you apply ED, it depends on when they give you the finaid package. It may push past many other schools’ RD deadlines. It’s a tricky game.

The general rule of thumb is NOT to apply ED anywhere if comparing FinAid is necessary.

Applying ED to one school does not bar you from applying RD to whatever other schools you want. You can do BOTH. The only requirement is that you WITHDRAW the other applications if (1) you’re accepted ED and (2) the aid package is satisfactory. If the aid is insufficient, you reject the ED offer of admission and continue to pursue your other applications.

The “danger” is you may turn down your ED school and find out later that was your best financial offer…
