yeah, BillBank, I emailed Nanette (haha) about the pac islander change and then the hispanic change. I hadn't factored in my grandparents(they're from spain) at all...so I think this helps me quite a bit.

When I found out about the ED AND EA thing in mid october, I applied to three immediately lol

EDIT: Omg. WashU is 2% hispanic.

Overstressed...

Chill ! You still have a shot and you sound like a kid who will do well wherever you wind up. You will find a place.

It is shocking to see the stats of the kids turned down by elite schools. Every year there are horror stories of kids with 1600 SATs and 4.0s turned down by HYP schools. Wash U is just a notch below. A 2200, astounding though it is, is not in the top quartile at Wash U. There will always be hundreds of kids with these stats who are not admitted. It takes a 780 (a 780 - missing one or two questions!!!) just to reach the top quartile of math scores at Wash U. So you can't grab 3, 5 or even 20 anecdotal stories and determine why anyone was accpted or rejected.

The admissions folks rightly look at a lot more than GPAs and SATs. I stand by my other posts: the admissions office knows their school, and if they decline you, it is probably not a good fit. Not that you couldn't do the work (of course you could as could almost every kid on this board), but you would find it uncomfortable. Schools have cultures and students have personalities (thank God). You have to find a match and the admission folks are in a better position to gauge it.

I think I like too many schools :/
I have like 5 number ones now.

I applied early decision to Washington University as a back up in case I didn't get accepted to the University of Chicago early action. It's kind of ironic that my early decision school was my second choice. I wasn't sure if I could apply to both early, but I visited Washington University and asked an admissions counselor and he said i could apply both early decision and early action. It worked out for me at the end, so that's good.

Overstressed, being from Spain doesn't make you "Hispanic," which refers to cultures in Latin America that underemphasize education. You might be taking away the spot of someone who could truly benefit from affirmative action if you did mark it (so it's good that you didn't). If you're Filipino, that doesn't count as Pacific Islander either based on the definition of Asian (as agreed-upon by colleges).

I'm part-Portuguese, but I didn't mark Hispanic for ethical reasons. I got in anyway despite not-so-high stats. I think they took into account that I come from a very poor family.

Ariel, how could you apply to WashU as a "back-up in case [you] didn't get accepted to the University of Chicago"? If you had gotten into UofC, you still would've been required to attend WashU, your "back-up."

sanjenferrer: I looked up Hispanic in wikipedia. Denotes anyone from the Iberian peninsula. You, being portugese, could be Hispanic as well. And one of my grandparents is from Chile as the other is from spain. So I do think it qualifies as hispanic.

Not Filipino. From around the Hawaii area.

However, good job on the acceptance :)

if I got accepted early decision, I would have gone. I know that. I would have just gone to my second choice. I know it's not the usual kind of backup.

Sanjenferrer, what did you decide?

Accepted! Now we have to wait to see finaid packages next week in the mail...and if you applied to any of their scholarships except for the early decision one, then we have to wait until regular decision to see if we get any aid from that.---but at this point im just excited!!!!!

Actually, that's not how it works -- I hope you realize that... You are expected to withdraw all other applications and accept your ED admission/send deposit by December 28th. People who need to compare aid packages should not apply ED anywhere.

just for a few more stats. about 4 or 5 kids applied ED from my school (i'm not one of them) mostly girls. only one got in this time around, and she happened to be african american. really bright girls though, i wouldnt be too surprised if a few got in later as well.

another to add, asian kid at nearby private school accepted with straight 800s as math scores. CR+W = not so good

1 more thing that may be helpful, I got this from a friend who currently attends

They overenrolled ED last year i think, so ED was tougher this year. It's a great school, but whereever you go you'll never know what it was like to be anywhere else. Ya know?
