Earth & Planetary Science (EPS) 20/80

Any inputs?
I want to take this class this summer (session D, I believe) with Chem 3a/3al.
Which one is easier?

Also, has anyone heard of PB 13 (Genetics?).

Thanks. =)

i took EPS 80 in the spring and i got an A but i would never recommend the class. the assignments where whatever but the midterm and final were so out of left field! the questions were not what i studied for at all! and i studied ALOT. there were too many true and false. I had Professor Berry. It might be a different teacher in the summer and so different assignments and tests but idk.

the information wasn’t that hard to understand at all though.

i do wish i would have taken another class for more units because it should have been more than 2 units for the work we did i guess.

Thanks for the info! =)

EPS 80 is being taught by Professor Andrews, so yeah…

What about EPS 20?

anyone taken eps80 with andrews before?

Not with Andrews, but I took EPS 80 with Berry. That class was ridiculously boring. Easy class though. No textbook required!

Hmmm, EPS 80. For a 2 unit class, we seriously did about 4 units worth of work. The grading wasn’t too bad though.

@ivy: yeh, and I do not want another 3-4 unit workload for this summer =/

Hmmm… this is dismaying. How was the workload exactly?

yep, pretty much agree with @HelloAll.
The class is pretty much bs if u ask me. We pretty much spent most of our time making posters. And guess what the final was? Designing a poster!

I got an A- in EPS 20 (Earthquakes) with Prof Allen who’s very clear and organized. It’s a lot of memorization of little details, especially numbers. Pay close attention in lecture and study off slides. Textbook not needed. I recommend it for the knowledge you’ll gain.

For the extra unit is it that much more work/worth it to take EPS 20 over EPS 80?

I’ve taken both. EPS 20 with Allen during the Fall and EPS 80 with Berry during the Spring.

Allen is a great lecturer and he has a charming British accent. His slides are organized and made available on his own course website. He also podcasts the lectures himself and uploads them. The class is relatively easy for a 3 unit course. About 4-5 assignments that are all really easy. Extra credit is offered at the end of the semester that can boost your grade by 5%. Midterms and Final are part multiple choice, part T/F, and part short answer. Very fair course.

Berry on the other hand…this course was a waste of my time. The material itself was very worthwhile to learn, but it was presented in a way that was so unorganized that it just made me not want to bother. A few assignments throughout the semester that vary from short write ups to longer, more in-depth write ups. Exams are multiple choice and absolutely ridiculous. Questions are formatted as follows “What is the process described by… A) answer A, B) answer B, or C) neither/both A and B”. Some questions ask for very obscure details that are barely even mentioned during lecture. And since there is no textbook, there is nothing else to refer to, so if your lecture notes are lacking you’re screwed. But much of the reason why I have issues with this course is because I was so annoyed at how a great majority of the people in the class were so disrespectful to Berry and the course itself. It’s one of those courses people take to get the physical science breadth out of the way, so they just don’t give a damn. But that doesn’t justify cheating during the exams and on assignments (there was a shockingly large amount of cheating going on that I observed), and being downright rude…ok, rant over…

hopefully Andrews is a better prof. Thanks for the info though!

I’m taking EPS 20 this summer session d. It’s with professor V Zimmer.

Anyone has any thoughts on the instructor? Any info on the class? I’m a CC student taking this class and have no idea what to expect.

With EPS 80, though, even though the midterm questions are out there, they are curved and are worth little in comparison to the other projects, which you will get an A in as long as you put some thought into it. I got C’s on both of my midterms, 100% in everything else. I got an A.

I agree that the majority of the class were jerks, though.

bump the chump. ^^someone answer this please?

Just took EPS 80 with Professor Andrews. 3 presentations, 1 midterm (20% bonus if you write on all 3 questions, he only requires two), 1 optional final (worth up to 10%). I’d have to say it was a pretty good class and the workload was definitely manageable. Just do well on the presentations and midterm and you won’t even need to take the final. Both the midterm and final were take-home btw.

HelloAll: What were the presentations like? Do you present in front of the entire lecture?

it might be a bit different for you guys (I’m assuming you’re taking it session D?).
2 presentations were on the book (ecological intelligence)

 • 1st one was on 1 chapter from the book and one article
 • 2nd one was on another chapter from the book

The last/final presentation is worth 30%… it is also called the final project. We basically researched the topic of “compost” for Waste Management and each group was in charge of a specific aspect of it.

Yes they were in front of the class… however, if you just practice, its no big deal. I use to be a shy presenter anyways.

Yup, session D. Are they all group presentations?
