I am applying to UMich as a Reach (EA), but is there a certain major I could apply for that would make it easier for me to get accepted? I am thinking of applying as an LSA major, probobly for the Screen Arts and Cultures program. Is it easier to apply for certain majors? I could also be interested in something like the Sports Management program, business, or even psych. Anything that would make it easier for me to get accepted to my number 1 choice, Michigan!

I wouldn’t take this approach when applying. First of all, there isn’t much of a benefit to stating your major except for the fact that they will read your essay and see how committed you are to using potential skills in the real world. It might be better to simply write down what you like and/or what you have experiences working with.

Except for the specialized schools/the Residential College (which requires LSA admission anyways), UMich does not admit or decide anything by your intended course of study (unless you’ve thought of something HIGHLY unique that you may want to pursue as an individualized concentration because UMich doesn’t offer a program in it and can work that to your advantage in your essays).

If you apply to LSA, you will apply as, and if successful, be admitted as, “LSA Undeclared”.

If you apply and are accepted to the Residential College, are you committed? Can you change your mind about the RC after you’ve been accepted and just attend LSA?

You are free to transfer out of the RC and pursue an LSA concentration at any time, after consulting an academic advisor.

Allright. I mis-worded my question. My first interest, and my major at most of my other schools is business. However, due to Mich being my reach, I am planning to apply for Screen Arts and Cultures which seems to be an easier, less compettitive program than the Ross business school. Does michigan judge applications in groupings by major? Will I have a better chance in LSA than in Ross if I am applying as a reach? I would love to get into Ross but I’m not sure that I have the numbers.

Within an individual college, UMich does not group, judge, review, stereotype, demonstrate bias toward, decide, reject, admit, or defer anything/anybody/anyone by major during the admissions process. Your interest has no impact on your chances of admission, within the admissions process of the school/college you are applying to. Your chance of admittance to LSA is equal whether you indicate an interest in Screen Arts and Cultures or an interest in English.

But, yes, you would have a better chance of being admitted to LSA than Ross if you are a reach, simply because LSA admits on the order of thousands while Ross only admits hundreds. But if you want to apply to Ross as a HS senior, you still have to gain acceptance to LSA, Engineering, Art, or Music.

The average Ross BBA freshman HS GPA was 4.11, for LSA it was 3.8. Ross admitted 25% of it’s freshman applicants (332/1283) and LSA admitted 49.8 (15436/30947).

So i could apply to ross, and get rejected from ross but still into LSA somehow?

Ross will not consider you for freshman preferred admit at all unless you are accepted to one of the U of M schools I previously listed. This is because the BBA program does not begin until the sophomore year.

But yes, if you apply to LSA and Ross as a preferred admit, if Ross rejects you, you may still attend LSA and reapply for Ross before your sophomore year.

Ok. so on the common app i enter my major as the LSA major of my choice, and for the preferred admission slot i put Ross school of business?

Apply to nursing (if you’re a guy) or kineseology, and transfer to whatever you want.
