Does having alumni at usc help alot? just curious

Iwannaivy, USC's gradschool owns UCLA's.

USC's school of journalism and their business school are among the best in the world. Extremely difficult to get get into. It all depends on your intended field. USC film school is also tops. But UCLA owns USC in terms of law, medical, and engineering schools. For sure.

I'm almost certain having alumni in your immediate family helps a great deal. On the app. they ask whether either of your parents or grandparents are alums. The UC's for the most part don't care, admission is based on merit and personal circumstance. Though I've heard stories.

As far as undergrad admissions difficulty, UCLA is widely considered to be more difficult overall, but again it depends on major. If you want to attend LA as a bio. or english major, you will encounter great difficulty. If you want SC for journalism or econ., you will probably encounter the same degree of selectivity. UCLA standards require more from their applicants, and the guidelines are strict. No exceptions. USC's policy is a little more hazy. If you go to UCLA's admissions website they have a statistical breakdown of acceptance rates by major. They provide average GPA of applicants vs. avg. GPA of those admitted. It is very useful in determining which majors are more difficult and which ones are easier. USC seems to determine admissions on a case by case basis, but to gain admission into the highly competitive majors, the standards are just as high as anywhere.

my grandparents (who are both ucla engineering grads) always say usc is "Undeniably Second Class" but thats probably because their majors were the best at UCLA

"i agree with swangirl i know a few people who got in there cause of their money. look at kristin on laguna beach. hahahaha lol"

Yup, I've seen this too. Sad but true.

Check out these two websites for UCLA. will you have your prerequisites done?
They give stats based on acceptance rate, average transfer gpa by major etc.
UCLA Undergrad Admissions: Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2008
UCLA Undergrad Admissions: Profile of Admitted Transfer Students

UCLA's philosophy major seems to accept more of it's transfer applicants than does Poly sci. The average gpa of those accepted as philosophy is 3.55 while poly sci is3.65
