I also know several top talented MT kids who chose Yale over BFA programs. One of these, a recent grad and good friend of my D’s…was a lead on a national tour this year. He was in many musicals while at Yale.

The last time I counted, Yale had produced quite a few Broadway and National Tour MT performers - more than many other MT programs (more than most, actually). Nature or nurture, who knows, but the results are there.

Good article in the Yale Daily News about their MT program:

Look at Oakland University in Rochester, MI. It is an auditioned BFA which has historically had more of a local draw in southeast Michigan, but is worthy of consideration on larger scale.

Look at Western Michigan University in Kalamzoo, MI, also an auditioned BFA which has historically had more of a midwest regional draw, but is certainly worthy of consideration on a national level.

Both schools have BFAs in MT, Acting, Dance, Music, etc so are very well versed in all areas of performing arts.

Please be clearer with regard to Yale. Are we talking about Yale undergraduate or Yale graduate? Yale MT undergraduate historically was run like a club sport. Yale Drama another story.

The two strong Yale MTs I’m referring to were/are both undergrads. I don’t know any firsthand detail, but here’s a bit of info on their Shen MT curriculum.

Shen Curriculum for Musical Theater
<a href=“June 2023 News | Theater and Performance Studies”>June 2023 News | Theater and Performance Studies;

With the visionary support of Theodore Shen '66, the Shen Curriculum for Musical Theater was established at Yale in 2006. A range of courses examines the American musical theater as a significant and evolving art form reflective of American culture, history, mores, and aesthetics. Most courses are jointly offered by the Department of Music and the Theater Studies Program. Composition, history, lyric writing, libretto writing, and performance courses complement those in music theory, music history, dramatic theory, and dramatic history. Shen faculty members are scholars and professional composers, directors, lyricists, librettists, directors, and performers. The curriculum is administered by Department of Music, with some courses cross-listed by Theater Studies and/or the Yale School of Drama.

D’s research into academically rigorous MT performance programs two years ago led her to choose Northwestern as her top pick, followed by Yale and then Brown.

Obviously none of this fits the OP’s “Easiest Auditioned Programs to Get Into” topic, but now I guess the thread has an ancillary “Hardest Non-audition Programs to Get Into” section as well. ;)
