so i want to go to medical school which means i have to get good grades in college, anyone have any ideas what the easiest major would be to do this? also in the shortest time because im thinking of possible doing undergrad in 3 years. thank you! and please respond asap because i have to finish my application soon and need to indicate a major.

any major within letters and science is fine. adcoms wont take your major into account unless you apply for admission into another college like engineering

for medical school, id say pick a major you enjoy, however it may not be the easiest one.

dont even think about graduating in three years. i used to have that mindset before i realized that theres plenty here to keep me busy for 5-6 years. theres just so much to do within a given amount of time.

slow down, bannana!! You seem to have jumped to a lot of hasty conclusions and are making some erroneous assumptions.

Lets start with the most pressing, because I don't know if you'll even read this post farther. Assuming you're applying to the college of Letters and Science which houses most of the majors on campus, it doesn't matter what you pick in terms of admissions. They don't even look at it. Go look at the ucla admission site and see for yourself. So check any box you want; you can easily change it later once you're in college to another major in L&S.

Second, "so i want to go to medical school". And just how do you know this? Do you have extensive volunteer work in a medical setting or some other way to know this is the right career for you? I ask this not in jest, but as serious advice. Many HS kids are not that aware of the careers out there. Everyone knows about medicine, it can be a rewarding and well-paying field, so I think about 1/3 or so of entering frosh consider themselves pre-med. But unless you've actually spent time exposed to the day-in day-out life of medicine you don't know if it is right for you.

Far too many people end up regretting their choice of lawyer, doctor, or investment-banker as a career because they announced to themselves and the world that's what they were going to do without really investigating it. And another giveaway is that these people (those with a premature committment) always are pre-med. Even if medicine is a great fit for you, there are just so many other ways to be involved in the field that have tradeoffs in terms of the time committment and training required. Have you really considered and rejected physical therapist, nursing, occupational therapist, hospital administration, the various licensed technicians and therapists, all of whom are involved and vital to the delivery of medical care? I'd bet not.

Third, what's the rush? look up some of the posts by bigredmed, a current medical student, and see what he says about rushing to get that undergrad degree. Undergrad is more than just the classes you take,it's a time for learning about yourself and others, reaching some decisions on your own away from the influence of your parents and community, and for general growing and maturation. Talk to any college senior and I think they'll tell you that sometimes they barely recognize the person they were 4 years earlier. ucla (or wherever you to college) can offer you a fantastic array of experiences and opportunities, but only if you take advantage of them. And by searching for the "easiest major" you're already showing a mindset that completely devalues the college experience other than as a stepping-stone to somewhere else. I think this is a mistake. I doubt I'm going to change your mind on this, but I think it's something that needs to be said.

well said mikemac!!

mikemac,

Good post.

Bannana_girl, listen to him. He's wise.

its not really your major that will hack down your grades. It'll be the premed requirements (chem, bio, physics, etc.) which you have to take regardless of your major. So it doesn't matter (just stay away from engineering). btw, if ur applying now, it doesn't matter. Just put undecided cause you dont really declare a major till your junior year.

mikemac does it again!! :D
