<p>I need another southern safety school and my counselor suggested East Carolina U and U of North Carolina, Wilmington.</p>
<p>Any prior experience with either of these?</p>

<p>See if you can "track down" Jeep Mom- I believe her daughter goes to East Carolina U. I checked out website for UNC-Wilmington. I thought it was promising but NY daughter didn't want to be that far from home so we never gave it serious consideration.</p>
<p>I live in Greenville, NC and can tell you about ECU, grenville I would classify as a typical collegetown. ECU is known for their school of medicine and music program if you are going into these then it would be a good school for you. Personally I wouldn't go there but thats because I'm going into engineering and I don't want to be to close to home. Also its one of the cheapest schools tuition wise only costing 8 grand a year.</p>
<p>Buffalo- If I remember correctly, NC "caps" its OOS students at around 16%, so if you are seriously considering applying to those school, get your applications in as soon as possible.<br>
That is just one of those facts I remember reading on these boards.<br>
Did you check out College of Charleston?? That sounds like a real nice school too.<br>
Buffalo, I really understand why you want to go to school down south, I spent 4 years in Oswego. My d swore she too wanted to go to school in mid-Atlantic or in the south. But when all was said and done, she decided to go to SUNY Cortland. You never know!! Good luck.</p>

Its overall program is fairly comprehensive and typical for a state university. Strengths include the life sciences, particularly biological oceanography, and UNCW offers one of the few undergraduate majors in this field. Core cirriculum appears to be broad but for a more critical opinion google the writings of Mike Adams, a conservative academic who teaches at UNCW.</p></li>
<li><p>Student Population
Naturally, mostly state residents and many from the eastern and shore regions of the state. Clearly, UNC-CH is preferred by lots of folks, but my impression is that UNCW continues to grow in popularity and selectivity by attracting bright students from the larger cities, at the expense of UNC-Charlotte and N.C. State in Raleigh.</p></li>

Very very attractive. Classic brick buildings nicely laid out. Prestine. Only a few minutes from ocean beaches</p></li>
<li><p>Region
No surprise that it's typically warm in Wilmington. About 100,000 people in the immediate area. While the outlying neighborhoods are "new southern suburban," the small dowtown core has a pleasant old character. The campus is essentially in the heart of a substantial commercial district with the typical franchise food outlets as well as purely local attractions, like the ice cream restaurant across the street from the campus.</p></li>

<p>We also toured UNCW last year while in the area. The people were very nice - in fact the honor's college personnel took some time to meet with my daughter w/o an appointment and were very nice. There is a beautiful dorm for honor's college students as well. It is easier to get into than UNC-CH partly because they don't get the huge numbers of OOS applicants that UNC-CH gets.
Positives - Near the beach, honor's college, ?
Negatives for us - Daughter did not like the campus - ( just goes to show that not everybody likes the same things) She felt like the campus was too barren and spread out and would involve too much walking to get around. (yes - I know- that is not the most important thing to look for , but it did factor LOL) We do know a student from her high school who is a junior there now and likes it very much.

<p>I would choose UNCW over ECU, mostly because of size. UNCW is considerably smaller than ECU (~10,000 vs. 17,000) and has the advantages that go with moderate size. I much prefer Wilmington to Greenville, but in all fairness, Greenville is a great college town that's growing by leaps and bounds. Females make up about 60% of the student body at both schools. Both schools have a work hard, play hard mentality that's to be expected from colleges near the beach. :p ECU used to have a large reputation for a thriving party scene, but that has been lessened considerably in the last 10 years and can no longer be considered a serious issue. ECU has much more of a sports scene (esp. football), if you're interested in that. Academics are similar at both. Business, biology, psychology, education, and communications are quite popular at UNCW and ECU. I have three sophomore friends (two female, one male) at UNCW studying chemistry/Spanish, psychology, and geology/music, and they LOVE being at UNCW. </p>
<p>I would consider App State and UNCW to be the most popular schools in the western and eastern portions (respectively) of NC, with UNC-Asheville and ECU running a close second. Others may disagree.</p>

<p>Back when I lived in NC (14 years ago!) ECU was known as EASY U ..not very demanding but a great time, still true?</p>
