East Carolina University

I was accepted there recently, considered it a safe school. Started to get rejected from my top, reach schools, but i’m still waiting on some other schools to answer me. For now, I’m considering attending ECU, but I just want to know if you all know anything about it, personally? I heard it’s a pretty big party school. I don’t party much, but I don’t mind the party scene, as long as it doesn’t distract me from my academics, but is it also a good school academically, aesthetically, etc? I’m majoring in Computer Science. How is their CS program?Just looking for some useful info regarding this school! Thanks.

I go to UNCW and ECU is known around these parts as “Easy U” - I know many students who say that they would have fallen into the massive party scene and mentality at that school. Except for a couple of respectable programs (nursing, premed), ECU isn’t at all a good school academically (2.5 stars). Their CS program is decent.

Easy U, that’s funny! So are you saying in general that it’s not such a great school?

It’s true that people don’t come to ECU for the academics. That being said, the academics at ECU are A LOT better now than they were 10 years ago. ECU is making improvements every year. I think we’re trying to get rid of the party school stigma by improving admission standards.
I would rank NC schools

  1. UNC
  2. NCSU
  3. UNCA
  4. UNCW
  5. App State
  6. ECU
  7. UNCC
  8. UNCG
  9. Western Carolina
  10. UNCP

ECU isn’t hard to get into but, depending on the major, classes can be rigorous. ECU’s top programs are the sciences. From what I know, ECU has a pretty good CS school. ECU is easy to get into but it is a large school. I visited several schools in NC (including UNCW, App State) and thought that ECU was the most like home. ECU also has some of the best school spirit of any other NC school despite being most students safety pick. The party scene is ignorable. There are tons of parties but nobody will force you to go. The only time parties get out of hand is Halloween.

You should definitely visit ECU. I fell in love the first day I visited.

Yes, OP, that is exactly what I’m saying. It’s not very good at all.

@WiliyamMSL ehhh. No way is UNCA better than UNCW. I’d rate them like this:

UNC
NCSU
UNCW
App State
UNCA
UNCC
UNCG
ECU
WCU
UNCP

@LBad96 My problem with UNCW is that it’s too hot. I hate the beach. Your ranking is fair overall. Any program at ECU that isn’t Comp Sci, Education, Music, or Nursing is part of the “Easy U” nickname.

OP if you’re looking for a school like ECU you should look into App State. If you want to major in Comp Sci you should look into UNC Charlotte.

ECU overall doesn’t rank high in academics. The beauty of the UNC System is that each college has a major strong point. ECU has nursing and education, UNCW has film and marine bio, WCU has forensics, UNCC has business, UNCG has elementary education, UNCP… is happy to be on the team.

@WiliyamMSL what’s your beef with the beach? haha. But that’s fair. I would add that UNCW’s Cameron School of Business is also a standout program; many (including myself) came here for the good reputation of the business program. Comp sci here isn’t bad either, and nursing is a respected program as well.

If one was to rank ALL North Carolinian schools, public and private, it would go something like this:

Duke (5 stars)
Chapel Hill (5 stars)
Wake Forest (5 stars)
NC State (4.5 stars)
Davidson (4.5 stars)
UNCW (4 stars)
Elon (4 stars)
App State (4 stars)
UNC-A (3.5 stars)
UNCC (3 stars)
UNCG (3 stars)
NC A&T (not mentioned in previous post; 3 stars)
Wingate (3 stars)
Gardner-Webb (3 stars)
Campbell (3 stars)
NC Central (not mentioned; 2.5 stars)
ECU (2.5 stars)
WCU (2.5 stars)
High Point (2.5 stars)
UNCP (2 stars)

Hey, I did apply to Elon and UNCC. I got deferred from Elon, then got rejected, but I didn’t mind because it was kind of expensive, so I wasn’t really expecting to attend. I’m still waiting for a response from UNCC though. Hopefully, I would get in. Otherwise, the other schools i’m still waiting to hear from are in Virginia.

If you got into ECU, then you’ll likely get into UNCC. Overall UNCC isn’t much academically but it’s engineering and business schools are really good. Be aware that it is a big commuter school and the surrounding area isn’t the safest.

I’m not planning to commute, since I live overseas, and all that commuting stuff is pretty difficult. I applied to the International Relations major, but i’m planning on switching to engineering. Glad to hear that their engineering is good.

OP - WiliyamMSL has given you some good advice, LBad96 has never stepped foot on any other NC campus and should not be paid much attention, IMHO.

My daughter is at ECU in the Honors College and loves it. She is in school with tons of smart and gifted students. She adores (most) of her professors and really likes the school. The party image is more historical than factual if you ask me, and I wouldn’t let that turn you away from the University.

UNCC does have some up and coming programs and is very popular for engineering students that don’t get into NCSU, but I agree that it is a commuter school, I hear that the campus can be a ghost town on weekends.
