east coast visual arts/writing schools

I'll be a senior in high school this year, and I'm looking to major in concept art/illustration, and possibly minor in some subset of writing or literature. I'm looking for an east coast school (not necessarily an art school, but preferrably one that focuses on visual arts and writing) that won't cost me an arm and a leg. I realize that art schools are generally very expensive, so I'm aiming for around a 30k a year or less tuition. Which brings me to another problem; I am from California. Am I reaching here? My GPA and SAT scores aren't particularly impressive, but I'll be applying for portfolio scholarships and the like.
GPA: 3.9 weighted
SAT: Around 1960ish? I didn't really study at all, so I'll probably retake them.
APs/Honors: Spanish II and III honors, AP Language & Composition, studio art AP, American Lit H
Senior Schedule: journalism, photography, world history AP, civics/econ, literature & composition AP
as far as my background goes, I am half asian, female, and pretty middle-class financially.

Which schools would you reccommend? And is my search for an affordable east coast art school completely hopeless?

If you can qualify for a merit scholarship--look into Bennington. Its expensive but they could be generous with the right student. Also check out Hunter College in NY.

bc. private schools are pricy but many offer financial aid. If your family qualifies (for example if their income is low or they have other children in college) then you will find that you would receive need based aid from most any college. Ask your parents to use one of those on-line calculators to determine how much you would be eligible to receive.

If the need-based aid isn't enough you should look into merit based aid. Many colleges will give financial aid to high achieving, talented students. Take a look at the thread at the top of the Parents board for some ideas.

Your grades, your art talent, your ethnic background would make you a person of interest to many colleges. So first determine how much and what kind of aid you would qualify for then come back for some ideas.

Check ouit Pratt Institute. They have both a strong illustration program and a very decent creative writing program.
