Easy Self Study Ones

I'm going to sign up for three exams, and I was looking for some good ones to self-study for. I narrowed the list on the Collegeboard website down, by eliminating all the foreign language, art, tough sciences, and tough english ones, plus the ones I've already taken.

These are the choices:

Environmental Science
European History
Comp Government & Politics
U.S. Government & Politics
Human Geography
Statistics
World History

Any recommendations on which ones, and which books to use would be great.

Thanks in advance

I self-studied for U.S. gov in about a week and got a 5. I just used the Princeton Review prep book. If you have a decent background in government already, you could definitely do the same.

Comp. gov't is pretty easy. Get the Ethel Wood book and start studying a month in advance (less if you have lots of time on your hands, more if you're really busy) and you should do fine.

What have you taken and what grades did you get?

Also, what AP classes are you currently taking?

jyankees, what would you consider a "decent background"? I know there's three branches ;-)

I'm looking to show my "love of learning" to colleges by self-studying a class (or two) I can't fit in my schedule...

Human Geography is extremely easy. Much of it is common sense, though I'd say there is quite a bit of memorization. I did take a yearlong class on it, though, so I can't necessarily say how hard it would be to self-study for in 2 months (actually, that does sound like quite a lot of time...). I got a 5 without studying and all I did was read the book and sleep through class (first period Social Studies doesn't work too well). Most of my classmates--in my opinion, quite stupid--got 4's or 5's. Even people who never read the book still got 3's.

I ended up taking 17 AP tests with 13 5s, 3 4s and a 3. I self studied the following:

The tests you included are good choices, with the exception of statistics in which the FRQs might screw you. Make sure you are starting of with familiarity in history for WH and EH. Particularly for EH, make sure you are entirely abreast of Religious movements.

I would recommend the Barron's books for EVERY AP test you mentioned. I self studied every test you named with the exception of stats and world history and earned a 5 on all of them. If you're a good writer, you might as well take English Lit this year too.

^^

What'd you get the 3 on...haha. kidding

Good job though, that's amazing.

Haha, thanks. I ended up getting the 3 on Micro (5 on Macro). Iono...I didn't take the time to review for it.

BUT, had I gone to a review session a few days before the test, I would have known EXACTLY HOW to do ALL of the FR questions which probably would have made it a 4 or even a 5.

By the way, the OP should add Psychology to his list. It's a BS, gimme 5.

^

Is it really a BS, or are you just really super-smart??

I was considering self-studying for it. Began to read the review book, then realized I probably wouldn't retain any of the information anyways.

1)My standardized test scores reveal that I'm pretty smart, but my ability to score well on self studied exams probably stems from the fact that I'm well read in a variety of areas
2)If you are a strong reader and (you DO have a FULL two months of prep) then buy the Barron's book and start preparing.

ACTUALLY,
I would go to B&N and read the Princeton Review for free and then purchase the Barron's for the heightened detail. ONLY buy PR for courses you already know and just want a refresher in. ONLY buy Barron's if you don't know jack because they force information ODs. The Barron's Environmental Science book is about 300+ pages. Useless...just read the PR at B&N.

In two months...you'll be able to retain the information. ASU accepts 4s too, right? TOTALLY doable.

Also to the OP, if you're going to pick four from that list to truly focus on then choose:

European History-Barron's (no doubt)
Comp Government & Politics-First, just read all the CB advice on the prep site
U.S. Government & Politics-Easy with the Barron's
Human Geography-just read through PR

guys thanks alot for all the info

dearsiryes, yea I'm taking the Psych AP

mememe245, I'm taking English Lit, Bio, Psych, Spanish, and Calc this year

I'm not that great at English or Spanish so not taking either of those

I'm basically taking Psych, Bio and Calc (already took US and English Lang last year)....then I was thinking of adding 1-3 more, which are looking to be

Environmental Science
US Government
World History or Human Geography or European History

Of those options keep:
US Govt, Human Geo and Env. Sci (especially since you're doing bio right now)

yea those three make sense, thanks for the help
