I will be a senior in HS for the 06-07 school year and an opportunity has arisen that I could pursue. My school is unique in that it is the only institution in the city of about 500,000 people with an operational planetarium. Now, I have not taken Astronomy at school, and do not plan to do so during my senior year, however I will be taking AP Chemistry and an Honors Physics course, plus I know the Planetarium director and have good rapport with him. My question is, to have a "stand out" EC on my brag sheet, is becoming a planetarium operator worth it? I already have a pretty good foundation of ECs, but none of them are too unique... I see this as a rare possibility to stand out... Any advice?

do it if you want to. maybe i am too idealistic, but you shouldn't choose an ec just for the purposes of a college application.

That is a good point... however, I am AV inclined, and I guess it would be easy for me... plus I do enjoy the science related ECs... I'm in the Chemistry club...

Thanks for the advice.

I think it sounds great. You might find you really enjoy it.

Yes- do it. You have the background, you have the interest. It will seem sincere and could be that standout something that the colleges look for. It could also make an interesting essay. Are you giving talks or discussions or answering questions from visitors? You can always write about how you got some 7 year old interested in astronomy- or you can write about your own personal experience. Yes I think it is a definite solid EC to do!! Colleges also like to see kids working. So this opportunity seems to win on that count too.

Thanks.... that's kind of what I was thinking...

Actually, the idea of an astronomy related essay came up when I was thinking about how I could combine an academic and interest essay combining astronomy and film... I think I'll pursue this idea then!
