ECKS SAH TurrRRRrRRR (Exeter) Thread of Hollering

This thread is dedicated for questions about Exeter.

People have been asking about the SSAT.

All I have to say , it's the least important part of your application. True story to ensue if wanted.

Ok, your Exeter thread is cooler than mine. So I'll post here.

Exeter = simultaneously the best and worst place on the planet.

advice:
Uh - don't eat the eggs that are made from creepy powder in the mornings.
Grill flavored coffee = expensive, but delicious.
Audition for theatre. We're doing South Pacific this fall. And we need people. Although, if you want to have a life...don't.
Don't be evil.
College doesn't matter. At all. Ever. You'll go somewhere fine and get a good education no matter where you go. if you whine about college a lot, people will hate you. Even if you do worry, keep it to yourself.

No one hollers at Exeter. :( Must be out low 6% colored population that needs to be increased for fun. Damn.

Okay - ***?
Where are the preps? And the new lowers? or any other new and interesting people.

lame.
Topic? OMG I NEED 2 GET IN2 A GUD COLLUGE IVEE LEEG. ::SPASM::

does exeter have dance classes? how big are the dorms usually? like how many people are in each?

Exeter has dance as a sport, but not dance classes like theatre classes. Usually dance is for lowers-uppers-seniors, but if you ask I think you can get permission to do it as a prep.

Dorms vary. Most dorms have 30-40 people, except for exceptionally big ones that have 70 or so (like Dunbar), and houses have 10-15 and are for upperclassmen only.

Yes, there are dance classes, although I don't know a whole lot about them. Dorms are generally 35-60 people.

Okay, I have a few questions.

How big is Langdell Hall, people-wise and room-wise?
Do day students and boarders tend to seperate?
What math course do the majority of incoming preps take in the fall?
Are any of the required freshmen courses particularly hard?
Are any advisors considered to be "the best" advisors?

Thankss!

70 people?? Good Lord, is Dvnbar a castle?

Curiosity: Is Wentsworth the most popular boys dorm? My friend could be exaggerating...

oh yeah, that was a question of mine too. Is there any one girls dorm that is extremely popular and a lot of people want to be in?

Dunbar's not a castle. It's just...this really big brick Georgian monstrosity (but a pretty monstrosity)

Langdell: 35 or so people, rooms are quite large. Preps get rather enormous doubles; nearly everyone else gets singles.

Day students often seperate from boarders, but there are a few boarders who are "honorary daystuds" and hang out in the Day Student Center, and a few day students who pretend not to be and hang out a lot with boarders. It depends on what you want, I guess. I'm a boarder but one of my closest friends is a dayStud.

Wentworth is definitely a "popular" boys' dorm. It's got large rooms, good facilities, and is known as the "jock" dorm. Go figure.

Most preps take transition 1a or 1b, which goes to (I think) 230 in the spring or 220 in the winter. Or maybe 230 in the winter.

Amen Hall is extremely popular because of its facilities (it's known as the Amen "hotel." It's got an elevator.) Dunbar's also pretty popular. But generally, the best advice is to NOT request a dorm and let the deans place you in the "right" one.

Advisors depend on your dorm. They're generally useless, IMO, unless you actively try to forge a friendship with one. You can switch advisors, though, if you end up being closer to a different dorm-fac person. (Best advisor ever? Probably Mr. Golay in McConnell Hall. I was in McConnell last year - had Coogan, but Golay ended up as my "honorary" advisor. He was so cool - if I hadn't moved to Dunbar, I'd probably have ended up requesting him as an advisor.)

I hear Asian Civs is hard; I wouldn't know from experience. But I will say this - the spring term Medieval history elective is the best! It wasn't easy, but it wasn't impossible, and I learned a lot. Part of that could have been my teacher, though. Mr. Hertig is easily one of the best teachers in the school, and in fact developed the MedHist course, so....(however, I've heard mixed reviews of The Greeks and bad ones of The Romans.)

Thanks! I'll ask some more questions, which you can answer or not. I really appreciate it!

-Dorm room: Is there are mirror there already? or do a lot of people bring one? Do people bring a chair or a light or anything like that in general.. or is that too cramped?
-If you get the laundry service, how long does it take them to return it? And what's that like
-What's freshman orientation like? Are the first few weeks really busy or purposly easy?
-With the art requirement, is theatre: "Speechmaking" a good course? Like public speaking? And is photography 1 generally liked? easy/hard?
-Do the majority freshmen participate in a sport? Or just go to the gym for the period on their schedule?
-How much math do you actually have for homework a night? Well actually how much total (time-wise) home work do you have a night?
-Is the newspaper serious or sort-of a joke? How many kids work on it on a regular basis? And do preps get to participate in competetive debate? Are there try-outs? How many people are chosen?

Thats all for now. =) Thanks again!

Don't listen to Tara. Almost every boarder wants to choke the day studs becuase they complian about going to bed at 10 whereas we stay up until about 1 or so.

Popular dorms = who cares? You'll find your own group of friends.

Stop worrying. It'll be fine.

I'm not worrying. I'm excited.

Aw, shuttup Sergio. There are some cool daystuds. They're all creepily efficient/organized, though, that's true.

Yes, there's a mirror.
Laundry - pickup depends on your dorm - you get stuff back 2 days later. Get the prepaid drycleaning option.

For the arts requirement? I heard speechmaking's ok - but if you're going to take theatre, take playwriting or directing. Ms. Ream teaches those courses, and she's an amazing genius woman. Scary, a little, but only because she's just so cool. What can I say; I'm a Ream fangirl.

Newspaper = eats your life. People are insanely dedicated. S'a cult.

Your math homework (if you choose to DO it) is 8-12 problems. Technically, you're supposed to have 50 minutes a night/only do 50 minutes, regardless of how many you've done in that time.

Preps usually do spaz. I did drama-sports, though, so can't comment.

As for the dorm popularity thing - I agree with sergio that it's nothing to worry about. Most people love their dorm, even if the rooms are small or Mr. Feng is creepy or there's some odd smell in the basement....most "popular" dorms are just that way because they're physically nicer, I think - i wasn't really referring to "popular" people.

Good thread needs to be bumped. How much do jobs pay?

if you still care, it was around 6.50 to 7.50. Somewhere around there, I believe.
