I was admitted into the Class of 2014 and will be attending Emory in the fall. I was wondering if anyone could offer and insight on the economics department at Emory and how strong it actually is? I originally looked at Emory for its business school, which I know is very good, but recently switched my sights onto economics. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You won’t learn anything from anyone in the econ department. Whatever you can teach yourself is what you’ll know at graduation, which defeats the purpose of paying a college tuition. The department is totally research-oriented. I took 5 econ classes and did not have a single good teacher. It’s not even worth going to class.

It’s not often that el duque and I agree, but I too dislike the econ department. There are only a handful of faculty worth taking classes from. Most departments have several good teachers, but for some reason, the econ department is the exception. Go to the business school.

I *en love the Econ department at Emory. My advisors/professors so far have been amazing. Even though I am just a freshman, most of professors I talked to already have research projects set up for me…From my upperclassmen friends, they said that the reason Econ at Emory seems so easy, is because the professors work really hard to make sure that the students understand the subject. (This is a stark difference from schools like Northwestern, where I hear the Econ professors are ***bags who are all research oriented, and don’t care about their students) So far in all of my econ classes, the professors have been amazing when it comes to explaining material. I really enjoy all of my econ classes here. The faculty go out of their way to help you with projects, course planning, help in courses, and study abroad programs…I am so glad I decided to major in economics…

Don’t go to the b-school. My friends who got into the b-school, decided not to go, because the professors at the b-school don’t care about their students as much as the Econ professors…

Colleges, Can you name any specific professors? I’ve had some horrible macro professors (who didn’t understand the basic material), but Francis is pretty good, even though he doesn’t teach really hard material.

I highly recommend math/econ joint over just econ so you don’t have to take as many of the (horrible) econ electives. You need math to study econ, anyway.

i’m already half way through my econ requirements (201, 212, 215, 220, 101/112 through ap) and i’ve never needed go to class or study for more than a day or two in advance for my midterms/finals.
