econ liberal arts or business finance and econ

i was originally gonna do business finance and econ in mendoza, but now i am having second thoughts. my theology professor--who is a pretty credible source (got hist masters at cambridge!) keeps telling me not to go into mendoza. he says classes in mendoza are extremely easy and not challenging at all "you will be hitting your against the wall bored in mendoza"...

i'm really interested in econ, but i am just afraid i won't have the same job opportunities as i would graduating from a business school (although my professor pointed out that most schools don't even have business schools--only a handful of ivy's even have them, stanford doesn't, as well as a lot of other prestigious schools--maybe that's why mendoza's rank is so high ;] )... so anyways he bashed mendoza so much and said just learn as much as you can as an undergrad and get a well rounded liberal arts education, then if you want to get a specialized education go get your mba (which i plan to do eventually)...

so it's the classic well rounded liberal arts education vs. the specific business education...

anyone have any opinions? i REALLY need help!

note* seeing that my theology professor is a theology professor his opinion might be biased lol

Yes, your theology professor's opinion is biased, but I agree with him.

When I was at ND, I chose to take the business school route (BBA-Accounting). If I had to do it all over again, I would have chosen a well-rounded liberal arts education. It's just so much more interesting. My favorite classes were in the arts and letters school.

I suggest Econ Liberal Arts (or any kind of liberal arts) especially if you're planning on getting your MBA!

the thing is that i have enough ap credits to double degree, according to my advisor... so i could get my degree out of mendoza, fill all the liberal arts requirements, and get a degree in whatever i want in liberal arts... so i would get that sort of experience... i told my theology professor this and he stills thinks i should just do liberal arts...

haha josh he said the same thing to me! cuz i knew i wanted to major in something in arts & letters but i was considering doubling in something in mendoza cuz of my ap credits. but scotty was very against this and just kept telling me how all the major companies like people with liberal arts degrees better. he doesnt seem like a big fan of the business degree haha

Do physics. If you need a reason why this rocks the business world, go talk to Kolda on the third floor of Nieuwland Hall of Science.

haha yeah, maggie, he was bashing on mendoza SO MUCH... he basically said "mendoza is for rich legacies who will never get past middle management positions"... not a direct quote, but a good paraphrase! lol he was all like, people who actually become extremely successful are the well-rounded people...

it's hard not to give him credibility though--i forget where he went to undergrad, but he got his masters from frickin cambridge and is getting hs phd from nd theology!

he went to williams- he's a beast

If you want to be a business man just go get an MBA later on. Besides Arts & Letters has the best looking chicas, and the best professors.

if you have plenty of credits, why not do the double degree? i am currently finance / econ, and while mendoza's classes have not challenged me content wise...they still make you work to get the A. the practical knowledge you get in mendoza combined with the courses you take in econ set you up very nice for a number of careers..

..also, mendoza is required by some governing body to have its students take a certain number of liberal arts classes by the time of graduation.

so, because econ and finance overlap (they do - in about three courses) you'll still have time to experience the intellectual joys of A&L all while the business degree will make you more appealing for internships and initial job opportunities.

you just have to instill in yourself that u can't let school (mendoza) get in the way of your education (a&L)...thanks mark twain

Your professor is right. An undergrad business degree just isn't impressive in the way an Econ degree is.

Do econ and something that interests you. Work for a few years and if you want and need an MBA, go get one, hopefully on your employer's dime.

thanks for your comments!!! I'm just going to wait to decide... I kind of want to double degree finance/econ in A&L, but I figure I would get some econ in Mendoza so I would be better off learning something new...?

also, i really want to do CAPP (computer applications program, i think?), but it is a supplementary major, and i don't think I will have enough credits able to double degree and have a supplementary major... I don't know maybe, i have almost 50 ap credits so i'm sure it's possible because a lot of the requirements between mendoza and A&L overlap... i only need a few more classes to complete my A&L requirements. I'm gonna talk to my adviser and see if that would be possible with heavy course loads.
