I'm considering applying to UVA and Upenn as a transfer this next fall; however, I am curious, which has the best economics program and, does the fact that penn is an ivy and uva is a public have any impact on one's career chances. Also, would one get better internships from penn over uva, etc.

I havn't been accepted to either - my fingers are really crossed. Assuming you could choose between the two, which is better for an economics major?

Definitely Penn! Although UVA does has an awesome Economics program, however ties with Wharton will definitely bring you far... more name-recognition and so...

From purely an academic and networking point of view, Penn has an edge over UVA. As a means to entering some industries, like IBanking, Penn is unbeatable. But many other variables must be looked at. Penn has a nice campus and a fun atmosphere, but UVA is generally considered a more pleasant experience. If you value overall experience a great deal, UVA is hard to beat. One must also look at cost. If you are a resident of Virginia, UVA will cost only a fraction of what Penn will cost. If you come from a wealthy family, that's probably not an issue, but if you come from a middle income family, it may be hard to justify paying over $40,000/year to attend Penn when you can attend UVA for less than $20,000/year.
