Econ major?

I am waiting on my decision from Vandy (RD) and I was wondering how the Econ program is. I know that a bunch of people go to Vandy for it, but is it that great? If I go, I'll be majoring in that, at least at first.

Economics is a common major at many schools, especially at top 25 schools from which many current and prospective economics majors hope to jump into finance/business. I think it’s a safe assumption to say Vanderbilt has a top notch econ program.

I believe USN ranks it as like 34 for economics, but you should probably look up the school’s statistics on good job/grad school matriculation for econ majors (which should give you a better picture).

If you want to go to graduate school in econ, you probably will end up taking some graduate classes as an undergrad. That is when it pays to go to a school that has leading researchers, in part because they can give you good letters of recommendation. But otherwise, it does not matter where you go. Most colleges use the same econ textbooks, and the professors studied at the same top econ departments. So all undergrad programs are about the same.

Well if we’re talking about resources for grad school, his focus should be more on Vandy’s math department and its strengths rather than economics itself. Pre-PhD coursework is pretty much bent solely on math than actual economics.
