Econ Major

which econ series would you reccomend if you use you 5 on AP CALC BC to fullfill math requirement for econ major?

also, just to make sure, does econ require a certain number of breadth courses???

GiftOfForesight: I suggest applying for PEIS as soon as possible just so you may get an earlier TeleBears date. To do so, you must fill out the PEIS app, plus the double major form. This form requires econ advisor's signature plus a planned schedule for the rest of your college years.

bostonceltics: Economics is part of L&S, so you're required to take those 7 breadth requirements. Outside of that, there is nothing besides the econ requisites.

wait, i am also majoring in business, so are those 7 breadth requirements the same 7 breadth requirements as in the econ major???

They can overlap.

And you are NOT majoring in business administration--not yet anyway. You should have a PLAN if you do NOT get into Haas.

It depends on your other APs, for Haas, since it lets you satisfy them with AP credits (it's actually quite easy to have EVERYTHING waived for Haas breadth with just AP credits). But otherwise, they can overlap. Be careful though, Haas breadth is different, and some catagories, such as International, require TWO classes to satisfy the requirement--not one.

where can i find the breadth requirments for econ major. i have been looking at the econ webpage but i only found the 5 classes required to declare econ major. where is the breadth requirments?

I might have problems fitting IAS 045 or POLSCI 2 (or STAT 21, one of the three) into my schedule before the spring semester of my 2nd year. Would applying at the conclusion of my second year be a problem?

i have another question. in order to place out of econ 1/2, is a 4 or 5 required on BOTH the AP macro and micro tests? will a 5 on the macro test get you out of anything? thanks!

you need a 4 or 5 in both macro and micro to place out of econ 1

aww man, my school only offered the macro test. oh well, thanks for the info jpb0719.

you do get 2.3 credits though

i'm in the same boat

yeah, the 2.3 units help. it's ok, econ 1 is a good refresher since i took ap macro econ 1st semester of my senior year, and with summer laziness some of it may be forgotten.

aghh is anyone in a similar dilemma as me? i have about 30 or so blank units from AP's (i only took 7; its not like i took TEN or ELEVEN like some ppl from my HS i know), but I've realized those blank units make it so that I MUST fulfill all the econ prereqs by at least my sophmore spring semester. i've calculated it. if i put in my application for the major in sophmore spring semester ill have 90 units total or so (counting the ones in progress during that time). so yea ill be SCREWED. AHHH

also can anyone advise me here:

I got a 5 on the AP Calc AB (no BC at my school), so I could technically go straight to 1B. I'm not though, because damn 1A-1B are both clogged up on telebears. So I think I'm going to do Econ 1 and Math 16B my fall semester. Then I'll go Math 1A + Stat 20/21? spring semester...and then probably Math 1B + Econ 101B concurrently during sophmore fall semester.

Does that sound reasonable?

AP units don't count towards the 80-unit cap.

Are you serious? I checked on the Economics department website just an hour ago and I swear when I read about the 80-unit limit it sounded like it included any units that were earned before HS graduation such as IB or AB classes.

EDIT-----

You were right. It says "excludes." Stupid me. Thought it said "includes" AP. By the way, but this may be a stupid question that everyone has asked before already, but if you are somewhat decent at calculus, and decide to jump in to Math 1B freshman year after a "5" the Calc AB exam, is it possible to get an "A" if you study your butt off (like seriously literally killing yourself studying?)

Or is it SO hard like everyone says, that even if you work harder than you ever have in your life, you can still get screwed by the curve and end up with a B or C?

"This total excludes high school enrichment units, e.g. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or other college units earned prior to high school graduation."

I know this for sure because I would have been dead in the water if my AP units were to count towards the cap.

Heh yep I just saw that a minute ahead of you. lol

Ha.. I'm gonna resurrect this Econ major thread... soo wow.. today I went to talk to the Econ major adviser... and i asked what kinda GPAs they consider for admission into the major.. and she said: as long as u have a 3.0 in ur prereqs ur in the major... and i'm like: wow really? but on the website it says 3.4 in ur prereqs... and shes like: nope, you must have been looking at the honors requirements.... so basically, u just need a 3.0 in ur prereqs and ur overall GPA doesnt matter.... and right now, I'm feeling really good... but I was wondering, does this person know what shes talkin about? cuz if its 3.0.. i can cruise through the rest of summer school and play some more world of warcraft instead.. but if its 3.4.. then I gotta step it up..

If I may let you in on a little secret, she does know what she is talking about, but did you talk to Sandy or the new advisor Rebecca??? I got into the Econ Major with like a 2.9 ish GPA, literally 0.02 pts off of a 3.0. I know it sounds awkward, but I guess that many people applied to business last semester so I got in, which I was very relieved about, but yea, I dont think you should take it in any light manner because Econ is still very competitive especially with all the Business majors that did not get into Haas, you will definitely be facing tough comp this semester, but yea, if you have somewhere at or above a 3.0 I think you will be solid. Good Luck.

So its your prereqs you should really be worrying about eh? You could pretty much get a C in all your other breadth/exploration courses?
