Hey,
How is the Econ major at Northwestern? If I went to NU, I'd probably major in this area and then follow the pre-med route because I * definitely * wanna do pre-med. How rigorous is the courseload and how competitive are the classes?

Not altogether that difficult. If you put in time to fully read the textbook and make sure you understand the material, you’ll get an A/A- for just about every class. Econometrics might be the most difficult but even that isn’t as hard as people make it out to sound.

The econ major is possibly the single most popular major in the school, presumably at least in part because it is regarded as a very strong department.

Would it be hard to balance with pre-med workload?

It is pretty easy to double major at NU, so it should certainly not be a problem to major in Econ and do all the premed requirements in terms of just the number of courses per term.
In terms of difficulty of workload, that is really dependent upon the individual student. Are you very strong at quantitative stuff (which would relate to the math you need for premed and the econometrics and stat you need for econ) and the sciences required for premed? If so, it won’t be a problem, although i would think of the combination as a generally challenging workload.

Quantitative stuff is a strength of mine, actually. And I’m looking forward to a challenge; I just hope it’s feasible and rewarding if I put in the effort.

I’ve more or less finished up all of the core requirements for econ majors and I’ve barely had to do any math. Its all just basic algebra and calc with some stat mixed in.
