Economics Major at Northwestern

Is there anyone here who is currently pursuing an Economics major (or even minor) at Northwestern - or might be planning to in the future? Or anyone who might just know generally what the Economics department at NU is like, what the professors are like, or might have taken even just an intro class and have an opinion/experience to share?

ANY information on Northwestern Economics would be greatly appreciated! :)

I’m interested in this as well. Also, from what I’ve heard econ is pretty popular, and the classes are huge (and they stay huge for a while). Just wondering if the huge classes are only the core ones, and how big they actually are…

Also, how many math classes are required, and what is the highest level math that is learned for an econ major?

I am a freshman economics and industrial engineering major. I really like my professors so far and really enjoy my classes, even though they have been big lectures so far. As an engineering major, however, the requirements to complete an econ major are pretty wimpy. Students do complain about 201 & 202, but you can pass out of these with ap credit.

Econ is a very popular major.

Highest math class is differential calculus I think (can pass out with calc ab), but you can do other things like econometrics which is math related. Also, many people still take higher math classes.

I haven’t taken any higher-level classes yet though, so I can’t help you too much.

Check out the econ department website for info.

Intro classes are big and very popular (some really great professors teach these classes). My son’s upper level econ classes were small. Econ is very strong at NU.

In terms of math, there are some minimum requirements (look on the Economics department website - link below), but you can make the major as math-y or not math-y as you want. My S took a lot of math and stats classes which he loved, but you can fulfill some of the requirements with other related classes instead.

My son, an econ major, is only a freshman so I can’t say much about the classes yet, but I know that the economics department is very well respected around the world among the academics. Also with the Kellogg Certificate Program, they do have a chance to get an exposure to the financial side though you need to get selected for it. He’s is taking Linear Algebra now which he says is very challenging but the professor is great since he’s in MENU program but I am sure you don’t have to take such high level math courses from the beginning. Many students seem to be thinking about doing double majors or at least a minor with econ since NU accommodates it well…

Also, you probably know but an NU econ professor won the 2010 Nobel Prize and that should mean something… [Dale Mortensen Wins Nobel Prize : Northwestern University Newscenter](Dale Mortensen Wins Nobel Prize: Northwestern University News)
