How Hard Will It Be To Double Major

In Economics and Biology. They are so unrelated and many people (including teachers) have told me this will be very difficult. I want to be on the pre-med track but having an majoring in Economics is also my plan.

Other people have done econ/pre-med, so that isn’t something you’re diving blind into. However, I haven’t heard of many econ/bio majors. Once you meet with your peer advisor during the first week of Wildcat Welcome, you can figure it out. I would believe that it’s possible, and not necessarily very difficult in terms of scheduling. The quarter system gives you a lot of classes (434) vs a semester system (524), which is part of the reason why it’s so easy to pick up degrees and have more time to explore areas of interest at NU - and so if you’re looking at picking up somewhat unrelated majors, you can.

As a general rule, it is easy to double major at NU. As for the particular combination of Econ and Bio, I can’t say, but I’m sure it’s feasible. If you are pre-med, though, keep in mind that you can be an Econ major and also fulfill the pre-med requirements without necessarily doing a second major in Bio. I have heard of English and history majors being pre-med, without doing a complete second major in Bio or another science.

You will be able to do it in 4 years. You may not have very much flexibility with electives, the quarter you take things, or what classes you take within the major (eg, Economics has you take 6 300-level econ classes, you may not get to take every single one you want if its not offered in a specific quarter). I was one of the few people I knew who didn’t double major. You’ll be fine.
