My daughter changed her major from psychology to economics today. We are working on her courses for the spring and have a few questions. The BIG plan is to apply for McCombs and the backup is staying with Economics.

She took Cal in HS and got a B in the class with a 2 on the AP test. Should she take Cal at UT or at a CC while at home this summer?

If she takes Cal 408C/D or 408 K/L, will these fill the Natural Science AND Core Requirements? I'm a bit confused on this issue!

She took Eco 304L in HS and found it very easy...was awarded student of the year. I know Eco 304K is a different thing. Our spring options are Hickenbottom or Trejo. Trejo being closed as of now. Should we take Hickenbottom now or wait?

Thanks so much!

1) I don’t think there is much harm in taking it at ACC.
2) It depends on the catalog, 08-10 it counts a good amount, for 10-12 it counts less. She can figure out exactly how her classes (and future “planned” courses) will work towards her degree by using the IDA tool in UTDirect. This tool is amazing, it will show you how it all works out for any major.

Okay, so we’ve decided to go ahead with Cal 408K at UT and finish Cal 408L at CC this summer. She wants to be done with those by next fall.

In regards to the catalogs, how am I supposed to know which one to pick for the IDA tool? It is a great resource but the outcome can be quite different depending on the catalog. What determines which one to use?

The catalog depends on what year you entered college. But, you can switch to catalogs as long as you graduate before they expire. Talking to an advisor about a lot of this information would be very helpful. They know a lot more about each catalog than I do.

First of all, from my personal experince Economics is a tough major that requires students to have good math skills (important for grad school).

1.) For the Calculus question, it depends. If she can get into McCombs then its best to take it at a community college during the winter mini term or summer. However, if she enjoys math and has a knack for it, taking it at UT woould be a good idea.

2.) I think at least one of the Calculus classes will count for the Nat Sci requirement as she needs both Calculus I & II.

3.) Take Trejo at any cost. I had him and he is the best professor for Microecon other than this one lady who tguht but was laid off. Avoid Hamermesh and any others. Hopefully, she can get into trejo’s class off the waiting list.

*If she or you have any more questions about Prof. Trejo I would be more then happy to help yall out. Just send me a PM if she gets into the class and I can give you my thoughts about the class as it is different then any of the other Micro classes in terms of the experiments that are done in class.

Good Luck!
