Economics and Business Majors Comparison in IVYs

Could anyone post information (comparion) on the economics, business, financial engineering majors in IVY schools? Thanks.

There are several routes you can take at the top Ivies. The best programs are the ones at HYP and Wharton simply for the name and recruiting purposes. Once you get into one of these, there are several ways you can make yourself stand out.

Princeton-- Operations Research and Financial Engineering program is an excellent mix of applied math, computer science, statistics, and economics for those who seek a more quantitative trading field for business. This is by far the best undergrad program out there for financial engineering.

Princeton–Economics and Finance program is an excellent mix for those who want to go into investment banking, but less quantitative. An additional Applied and Computational mathematics certificate in conjunction with these makes a highly competitive candidate in the job market.

Harvard–Economics is using the Harvard name to get through in business. The economics classes are highly academic and not much will be applicable to jobs. Also, the economics department are suited toward the jocks. However, still makes a job candidate highly competitive.

Harvard–Applied Mathematics is more applicable than Economics and better for the field of finance and quantitative trading. Harvard does not have a finance major, but this will make the applicant competitive in the job market.

Wharton–extremely competitive program for those seeking to break into ibanking. A mixture of economics and finance truly makes this candidate stand out in terms of the job market.

Haha, those are my 2 cents on these programs.

Thanks FermatABC, really good information.

Some further questions:

 1. What would you say between Wharton’s Finance Department and Princeton’s ORFE?
 2. What are the prospects for Ph.D study after Wharton and Princeton’s ORFE?
 3. What are prospects for Ph.D study in business school and Economics in a libral art college?
 4. Any information about Yale, Columbus and Dartmouth?
