Economics and Summer

Hi all.

I am faced with a relative predicament on my hands. I got accepted into COSMOS for the summer with full financial aid, but I want to major in economics once I enter college. Since COSMOS is math/science based, do you think I should attend it? Would it not make sense if I attended considering my desired major is econ? If it seems all right to have on my college app, would you rather participate in it or spend your time on something else, like essays? I say this because it takes up June 29th to July 26th, a time I would much rather spend devoting my attention to my essays. Help me out here, please!

Thanks!
Westmere

I think it seems like a great opportunity and if it interests you, go for it. Economics IS math based to some extent, so of course it could help. My philosophy is, anything that shows you go above and beyond can help you.

I attended the Westinghouse Science Honors Institute in my junior year, which consisted of science lectures on Saturday mornings from October to February. I'm going into international relations...I never intended to anything science-y. I just found it interesting, so I did it (and we got free food LOL).

Your essays shouldn't be something you agonize over, either. Yes, you should work on them and perfect them, but they should also reflect your personal voice which should come from you naturally. Don't try to make them perfect, try to make them yours. Your genuine voice is what makes it a great essay, not being immaculate and tear-jerking.

Thanks, that is actually very helpful advice. Any other opinions?

Wow, that is a long summer thing. I wouldn't be so quick as tlesc01 and go with a "take what you can get" attitude. If it were a week, then maybe, but that's a whole month.

I can't really help you out here.

Yeah, I mean, there are other things I can do at home during that time to provide depth to my other ECs instead of introducing a new one.

Plenty of people do things that long in the summer, like study abroads or like I got into the Pennsylvania Governor's School for International Studies (didn't end up going, long story), and I know a ton of people who do that during their junior summer.

Wait, is this a sort of camp or do you only come during the day?

It's a month-long camp where you stay and come home only on the weekends. Which is a problem for me, it's the core chunk of summer I wanted to use to bolster other parts of my application.

^I assume you'd have at least some free time at the camp during evenings, no? You could always begin working on it during evenings and weekends, and focus more on it during the rest of the summer/early fall.

Yes, there is free time during the evenings. But aside from that, do you guys think it is worth to go if I'm majoring in economics?
