economics at berkeley

i noticed that it was one of the applied majors. how does this affect the rigor and the reputation in terms of law school admissions and what does it mean to be a applied major?

Economics isn't too hard to get into as long as you maintain a B or better in the prereqs and I assume decent grades in your other classes. Btw these are the words straight from an Econ professor who I asked during a reception.

I asked an econ advisor. The cutoff for econ has hovered around a 3.4 GPA in the prereqs.

Economics is a capped major in the College of Letters and Sciences which means in addition to completing prereqs for the major you also have to apply and not everyone gets in. I think for Economics about 70% get in, and it's decided mostly by your GPA and GPA in prereqs. Regarding law school, it seems like for the most part law schools do not care much about major and focuses much more on your GPA and LSATs. Since competing to get into a capped major means probably a lower GPA for you, you might actually hurt your chances of getting into law school by majors in ecnomics instead of something else.
