Hi everyone, I am currently a high school senior and I’m looking to find some more information about the economics programs at Gettysburg, Hobart, and St. Lawrence. Does one of these schools have a significantly better economics program? I would really appreciate your insight. Please let me know if you have any other suggestions of small sized schools in the northeast with a relatively strong economics/business program.
I don’t have information comparing those departments specifically, but during my son’s college search, he was interested to learn that St Lawrence has a “study away” semester in NYC which is for Econ majors, combination of internships and class, focusing on finance/Wall St.
What are your stats? What is your budget? D20 looked at HWS and St Lawrence for Econ/IR along with 30 other schools. I could suggest about 6-8 others but want to give you schools that would be good options for your situation.
@helpingmom40 My gpa is a 3.8 and all of my classes have been at the honors or AP level. I am waiting for the results from 3 SATs but my practice tests have me in the 1300s. Fortunately, money is not an issue for my family and I can pay full tuition. Thank you for your help!
Within the past decade or so, I read about a new major at St. Lawrence University that combined econ with study abroad & foreign language training.
St. Lawrence awards a significant number of partial merit scholarships.
Outdoorsy, athletic school in a fairly isolated location. Beautiful campus.
You can use this site to compare colleges by faculty research in economics: https://ideas.repec.org/top/top.uslacecon.html.
Economics major programs differ in the following:
- Math prerequisites for the major and the intermediate economics and econometrics courses: low (no calculus), medium (single variable calculus), high (multivariable calculus and/or linear algebra. Student preferences on math intensity should be considered in this context. Pre-PhD students should prefer more math and take additional upper level math and statistics electives.
- What upper level economics electives are offered.
The above can be checked in the course catalogs for each college.
Look at Clark in Worcester, MA. D loved their study abroad program at LSE. If you like St Lawrence, maybe look at Bucknell, Lafayette or Trinity in CT.
Seconding the opportunity to study abroad at LSE! In the past, there was a program open to economics or political science majors which brought students together from various universities across the US to live in London together and study at LSE for a semester or one year. You might need a certain GPA in freshman/sophomore year to qualify for admission to the program in junior year.

I seem to recall that Gettysburg had pretty high career placements in one of the money management firms not far from them.
This doesn’t speak to the econ program, per se, but suggests that there are quite a few students with a pre-business orientation (who often major in econ.)
