Economics at Stanford

Hey everyone! I know I really don't have a very good chance at Stanford, and I really don't care, but I was just wondering how strong the economics program at Stanford is? My brother tried to get into Stanford, but with no luck. So I was wondering if anyone had any experience at Stanford with Economics classes or know of anything about the program. Thanks!

S is a junior at Stanford and has many friends in econ or in majors that require advanced econ classes. He reports econ at Stanford is very difficult. It is heavily math-based and causes quite a headache for the public policy majors.

I'm a Senior and an Econ major.

I'd be glad to help you out, but I'm not going to post some incredibly long diatribe on the pros vs. cons of the major. Ask me specific questions and I'll be glad to answer them.

how are the professors?? how difficult is to major in economics? how big are the classes? thank you docketgold

What you'd expect with a department of its size, not very, and it depends.

Profs are hit or miss. Some are good, some not so good, although I've never had one I'd say was truly terrible, as in, so bad it actively hindered by learning of the material. It's pretty easy to ask around and figure out which classes are good (i.e. have a good prof) and which aren't.

Personally, I don't find it all that hard of a major. It's not incredibly demanding, the unit load is pretty fair, and almost every class has some good takeaways that will stay with you. It may turn out it's just not your thing, you don't think in a way that's compatible with it or whatever, but I think most people find that if they want to do it and are willing to put in the work, they can.

Class size varies. Intro and core classes are something on the order of a couple hundred, upper division classes can be anywhere from 15 to 100, depending on popularity.
