My daughter will be majoring in Quantative Economics and is torn between SLO (she was accepted) and UCSB (she should get in and would be an Economics major with minor in Math). I can find a lot of rankings on SLO, but have struggled with UCSB. We have visited both schools and both meet/exceed her needs.

Any thoughts on what school would be best for her major?

I think UCSB would be better. However, Poly does have the business school which UCSB does not.

I grew up in SB, went to Poly.

Then there is no wrong decision! It comes down to gut feel; while students at both schools are living away from home, the feel of the 2 schools is different. I’d say pick the one that’s the better fit.

Reason you see Cal Poly more prominently in rankings is because it is one of the best schools that don’t offer PhD programs.

UCSB is a great research university,- more known for its strong physics programs - but gets buried in the rankings due to stronger competition among research universities.

I’d say both are great academically for what your daughter wants to pursue. Would SLO be much cheaper than UCSB? I’d choose for environment and cost on this one.
