UCSB or Cal Poly SLO???

Hi, this is very urgent and i made an account solely for this purpose. I need to make a decision by May 1st, which is in 2 days, and I am still very conflicted. I planned to major in business, and i was admitted into cal poly as that major, however i got accepted into ucsb as an economics major because they don’t have a business major. I’m very conflicted because i don’t know which is the best decision for me. I’ve heard that the economics major is very competitive, and that the curve tends to weed out those who will eventually not even be accepted into the actual major (first two years is pre-economics). Also note that i am not a math genius, but math is doable, but still econ is more math based. Whereas at cal poly i can concentrate in more specific areas (finance, accounting, information systems, etc). So i just
want to know what would be the best decision? I am also considering getting an MBA, so which major is more appealing?

Hi! It sounds like you’re leaning towards Cal Poly and I say follow your gut. Hopefully you’ve visited both campuses and spent time in Isla Vista/SLO and feel like you have an idea of which community is a better fit. I am an SB alum (and loved my time at UCSB), but they’re both great communities and follow your instincts. As far as the MBA question, you really can major in just about anything and still pursue an MBA. My husband was a psych major at UCSB, worked several years and then received his MBA from USC. The key is to maintain a high GPA, do well on the gmat test, have at least two years of solid work experience (preferably with some leadership positions- even if they’re volunteer positions as an undergrad). Best of luck to you! Two great choices!

@kkaatia On a side note, Econ, finance, accounting are obviously very math based. Pursuing opportunities in “business” doesn’t require a business degree. You might find that you enjoy the Communications classes, for example, more that Econ. Just something to consider. Find a major where you’re excited and feel you’ll succeed, and the rest will follow. Good luck!

@BayAreaRecruiter thank you for your advice! i will definitely take this into account

Sounds like Cal Poly is your best bet. Don’t count it out simply because it’s a state school, if it’s in your academic best interest. It’s a great school and more affordable than UCs. If you’re majoring in business, it sounds like you’re gonna go back for your masters as well. It’s not where you start it’s where you finish, so later on UCSB could still be in your future! Congrats on both!

@disneypeaches thank you for the advice!
