Economics, Finance or Math

I love math, Calculus specifically. I have a 31 on my act and a 3.9 GPA I will be playing soccer in college. My Father has done very well as an accountant. However, I want to do more than that, money is somewhat important to me. I have struggled trying to self teach coding in both java and matlab but im getting better. I do not think engineering is for me. I want to do something in business heavy in math. Being an actuary has always been an option for me.

Is there a question here? You have a number of posts asking about what major/career to pursue but in all honesty that is not a question that should be answered by a person on a blog who never met you. Do research – talk to people in different fields, look at the coursework you would take for different majors (typically found online), start taking college classes and see where your interests and aptitudes lie.

IMO the only question you should ask yourself before you apply to college is do you want to apply to schools for a liberal arts major (ex. math, econ) or apply business programs. And again, I’d recommend that you look at the coursework involved in each path before you decide.

Actuary.

What does “do more than that” mean re accounting and your father? Not suggesting you should go in to accounting but accounting leads to many paths. A few are:

  1. Partner at a Big 4 making hundreds of thousands of dollars per yr
  2. Leaving a Big 4 and opening your own firm (mom & pop or grow to regional) - I know tons of guys/gals who have done this and make a great living, own their own business, have great clients
  3. Corporate finance - many start in public accounting and get hired by clients. Some move all the way up the ladder. Have a few friends who are CFOs at public companies. Started out as accountants.

Very solid base to a career in finance and business. Has become a lot more strategic than number crunching (although there is a lot of that especially early in your career).
