Economics major

Does anyone know how difficult the Economics major is? Obviously it won't be easy, but I am concerned about the math requirements and if it's possible to get done in 2 years. I'm focusing on the Econ-philosphy major if anyone has any information.

definitely not one of the hardest majors at columbia. the math requirements for econ are really not too horrible. i believe you need to take calc1, calc3, and intro stats, none of which are all that bad.

You want to graduate in two years?

Hey people,

I was taking a look at the econ department website, and now there seems to be a new Financial Economics major. Do you guys know anything about it? I’m a transfer student and I’m going to Columbia this fall…

if you’re interested in working on wall street do it. Seems like a tweak to a traditional econ major, with more flexibility and more core requirements, but I think it’ll be a resume boost because you show that you are interested in finance and not just studying econ like the millions of others at every other school. I think it’s a brilliant move by Columbia, to attract recruiters from wall street and attract potential applicants looking for a strong return on investment. Traditionally banks would like econ/engineering/science majors, but look for relevant coursework in finance to judge interest in working in the industry.

It might eventually turn out to be a highly desired major, because it combines the Columbia brand name, with a financial/business oriented education with NYC location. Stern and Wharton have only 2 of the 3.
