Economics vs Business Economics !

Please help as I am caught up deciding between majoring in Economics and Business Economics at UCR. I know I want to enter study in the field of economics but am not sure as to which major i would excel more in. I feel as if majoring in business economics would be more applicable towards being more employable. Please help! I am somewhat clueless ;(

Hi StriveAndStrive,

I’m a senior at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) double majoring Finance and Business Administration. I can empathize with your question because I used to be an aspiring Accounting major before I realized that the path wasn’t right for me. I spent a ton of time (way too much, in hindsight) trying to decide upon what major or set of majors and minors I should choose.
I can speak only for UIUC, but I would guess that the situation at UCR would not be extremely far off. Here we have majors in economics, accounting, and finance. So, you would think each of those lead to very different paths, but it’s really not the case. When I interview for positions at F500 companies, consulting firms, and the like, I go up against all of these majors. Employers at the vast majority of these companies do not look at coursework to distinguish among students. They look at whether your GPA is good and that’s about all.
That said, your path is most likely different from mine, and I would recommend approaching this by talking to some professionals in the field where you are looking to go to. The major in and of itself is way less important than the job you end up going to. As I said above, most employers won’t care especially since ‘economics’ and ‘business economics’ might be interpreted as identical on a resume, but if there is some certification or very specific path that you are interested in, then that is something you should certainly explore.

Hopefully this is helpful!
