Hi so I’m currently a junior right now and was wondering if I could get chanced based on my extra curriculars. The colleges I’m applying to are: Berkeley, UCLA, Notre Dame, IU, and University of Michigan. Those are my top so far. And yes, I realize that these colleges also weigh heavily on GPAs, SATs/ACTs, and college essays. But seeing as though I plan to work on those over the school year up until I apply; I just want to know if my ECs will give make me a worthy applicant. Here’s a list of things I’ve done so far throughout high school:
Asian-American club committee member (4 years)
Pathfinder (basically where students are chosen to represent the school and help out during events seen by the school corporation) 3 years
Spell Bowl 3 years
Science Olympiad 2 years
Science Bowl 3 years
Super Bowl 2 years
S.T.A.N.D club (human rights) 3 years
Model UN delegate 2 years
Link Crew (where upperclassmen are chosen to help out incoming freshmen) 2 years
Environmental Volunteer (4 years)
Community work in India over the summer for 2 years
JETS Engineering Club 2 years
Intern at my dad’s clinic for 3 years ( I plan to shadow him or possibly someone else next summer)
Volunteer at a hospital for 1 year (I plan to do over the summer)
Biochemical internship at ISU (going on right now and I plan to do another internship under a different professor next year)
Indiana Science Fair participant (going on right now and hopefully next year as well)
I’ve done a lot of research and have heard that colleges like to see things being done in the area where the student is interested in because it shows experience and willingness (hospital internship, clinic internship, biochemical internship, etc). Is this true? Also, I know I might be lacking in leadership but I feel like my experience as being chosen to represent the school (Pathfinder) and guide upcoming Freshmen (Link Crew) should make up for that right (sorry I might be biased but I feel like I’ve worked really hard for this). Also, will it give me some what of an edge if I do a pre-college summer program? I know a friend of mine that did one in Georgetown and one in Berkeley and got accepted to Berkeley.
Thanks for your consideration!
You’ve got a laundry list of ECs without indicating achievements in them. If they involve competition, how did you do?
