Is GWU worth applying ED to if I am expecting to apply for FA? I am a twin with parents who make over 100,000 with a brother who just graduated from college. I know its difficult to answer but I just don't want to apply, get accepted, and then be left with a load of debt. If I email the financial aid office, would they be any help?

bump i would like to know also

sameee heree

If you apply ED you have to be willing and able to accept whatever financial aid package you receive. If you can't take that risk you should NOT apply ED.

well isnt it true if you apply ed....get accepted....however you do not get the fnacnial aid you were expected and are unable to afford the college, cant you opt out of the agreement?

Yes, but it's a pain in the ass to PROVE you can't afford it.

There seems to be a bit of a misunderstanding as to what is meant by "can't afford it." It's not enough for you to think you can't afford it. The university determines your amount of need, not you. If the university has fulfilled your "need" as determined by them using the financial aid formulas, then you are obligated to attend whether you feel you can afford it or not. (This is the way ED works at all universities, not just GW.)

Most likely, if you are a stong enough candidate to be accepted ED, you will receive an adequate combination of merit and/or need based FA (if you have need).

I'm afraid you are concerned that the FA award will not take into consideration your family's stress of having twins in college. Unfortunately, need is based on a methodology calculation (and the number of students currently in college IS taken into consideration).

You should know your EFC (you or your parents filled out the FAFSA). The college board site lists GWU's FA package averages 91% of need (this will include loans as well as grants!) Thus, If you were offered an average FA package - could you attend? If you have any doubt that you can afford your EFC plus 9% of the difference.....wait for RD when you won't have an obligation to attend.

Most schools expect you to do your homework about what you think your family is willing and able to pay towards school. On the othr hand, search the Financial Aid forum...others have been released from ED when they truly were not able to afford the school (but NOT that they waited awhile and got a better offer from another school....which is a possibility). As long as your expecations for FA are realistic and you're smitten by GW - you can try ED. There's no reason to believe you would be awarded LESS for being so committed to a first choice or awarded more for waiting.

Good luck

Thanks for the advice ahoo2u! Taking your advice, I do think I will be able to attend. I hope everything works out!
