ED and Merit Scholarship Question

Hello parents and students,
DS is a junior in high school. His stats are: 3.9 unweighted GPA, 35 ACT at one sitting (36 E, 34 M, 36 S, 34 R), AP Calc AB, AP Bio, AP USH, AP Physics I, and Calculus II and other honors classes so far. He will be taking Multi Var Calc, AP Physics C, AP Government, AP Econ, AP Music Theory and DE as a senior. He’s in Beta, Mu Alpha Theta, Chess (VP) etc in school and also volunteers and tutors outside of school. He also won a few piano competitions and scholarships.

I am fairly confident with DS’ stats, he should have no problem getting into Emory ED. With all that said, I understand ED is binding and a deposit needs to be paid in January, however, Emory scholar and Liberal Arts Scholarship results don’t come out until February. Is this correct?

We don’t qualify for need based aid; however, we can’t afford to send DS to Emory without some financial help. What do others do in this situation?

If you need merit aid, you probably shouldn’t apply ED. I suggest you run the net price calculator and if you’re not comfortable with the family contribution, apply RD and see what happens. Emory also has ED2 which notifies applicants by mid February but it’s still binding.

@eastcoast101 Thank you for your advice.
