Student is in the process of trying to get an appointment to a service academy, how does this affect applying ED? Will all other apps have to be RD (other than rolling, of course)? If they are accepted ED, can they back out if then accepted to a military academy? I would guess no, s/he can't back out of ED, but service academy appointments can be such iffy things - maybe they are different?

I do not have the definitive answer, but I would suspect that the ED contract about withdrawing other applications, whether they be for a service academy or a regular college. The ED school would almost certainly expect the student to withdraw all consideration for his appointment to the service academy upon his ED acceptance.

Working this now in our family. The vast majority of candidates to a service academy won't hear until January or later, given their dependence on an MOC nomination (and these slates are usually not released until late Dec/Jan).

Service academy apps are technically "rolling". So you can do an ED and service academy app simultaneously, but our operating premise is that ED acceptance means withdrawing the service academy app.
