ED Chances for Columbia?

<p>Columbia is my top choice, but seeing everyone's stats on here has made me feel inadequate. So, I am curious as to what my chances are realistically. Additionally, I am wondering if I should retake my Math 1. I am looking to major in Political Science, with possibly a double major or minor in English. Also, I'm going to be a senior.</p>

<p>Additionally, I am curious about my chances for NYU (merit based aid), UPenn, and Harvard. </p>

<p>Class: 2011
Race: Caucasian</p>

<p>Grades: My school doesn't have grades that are convertible to a GPA, but my unweighted average is 96.5 and weighted is about 100. My class rank is 12 out of 292.</p>

<p>SATs:
Math: 700
Reading: 750
Writing: 750</p>

<p>SAT IIs:
Literature: 790
US History: 770
Math 1: 700</p>

<p>Classes:
I've taken the highest level of classes I can take for everything. I have taken/will take all the APs available at my school (expect Computer Science). They are: AP US History, AP Psych, AP English Lit, AP Calc</p>

<p>Additionally, I took Intro to Political Science at my local state college and got an A, and will be taking History of Psychology in the fall semester, and a French 300 level in spring semester. </p>

<p>I took a creative writing intensive (Juniper Institute) at UMass Amherst the summer before my junior year, and received an A from the college. </p>

<p>Extracurriculars:
-4 years LD Debate, Co-Captain junior year, Captain senior year
-4 years GSA, Co-President sophomore-senior year
-National Hr Society VP
-4 years tech/acting in school plays
-4 years of school lit magazine
-4 years political volunteering in summer for various campaigns
-4 years doing stuff with a non profit local youth writing organization, was chosen out of over 1000 students to co-write a picture book they got professionally illustrated, that is due to be published in a month
-3 years Relay for Life team (sophomore-senior year)
-2 years interning for a book advertising firm, (summer before junior year/summer before senior year)
-2 years Model UN (freshman+sophomore year, then it was cut)
-2 years French club (junior and senior year)</p>

<p>Awards:
-Connecticut College Book Award
-Placed first in state at various debate tournaments
-Honorable mention for Women's Literary Union essay contest</p>

<p>Finally, the Columbia supplement asks me to write about what extracurricular is most meaningful to me. I am considering writing about GSA and tying in how I am a bisexual female (hardships associated with, political activism, etc). Would mentioning this be useful or should I leave it off?</p>

<p>Brown and Columbia are the only two that are reaches, but your scores give you a great chance at them. Your essay seems so interesting, too. gluckk</p>

<p>Thanks! I’d chance back, but since I’m posting a chance thread myself, I really don’t think I’d be of any help to you. My guess is as good as yours :p.</p>

<p>You have really good ECs and being first statewide in debate is a big plus. </p>

<p>Your SAT I is solid but not spectacular for the top schools. Class rank is very low for Harvard and borderline for Columbia/UPenn. Hopefully, your ECs/awards will give you a bump at Columbia and Penn, but I still would have to consider these schools a reach. If you could get your SAT II math up, you should definitely retake.</p>

<p>My overall view is that, based on the strength of your ECs, I think it’s worth applying to Columbia ED if it’s your number 1 choice. </p>

<p>I can’t really comment on the essay - it all depends on how you write it.</p>
