ED confirmation & financial aid appeal question

Hi,

I was accepted Early Decision, but my EFC was about $10,000 more than it should have been due to a decrease in my mother's pay and some other various expenses. We appealed the financial aid about a week and a half ago. Whether (and how much) they go down on our EFC will be a big factor in whether or not I can attend. I'm optimistic; I think we made a good case, and we spent a lot of time making sure the appeal was perfect.

But here's the problem: NU seems to have conflicting statements on its website regarding how long it takes for appeals to be processed. At the bottom of this page it says first that they will begin reviewing appeals starting in mid-July, but then it says the response time is "typically two weeks from date of receipt."

I just need to know what I'm missing. Is the July date maybe just for RD applicants and current students?

It doesn't seem to make much sense if I have to confirm my enrollment months before I even know whether I can afford to attend. Especially since confirmation involves withdrawing all my other college applications.

I fully expect the EFC to come down enough to make my attendance possible, but I don't think it would be wise financially to agree to something I'm not 100% sure I can pay for.

Does anyone know what the case is here? I guess I'll find out one way or the other, depending on whether I get any mail next week. But I'd still like to know what to expect. Any ideas?

Also, please no comments on how I shouldn't have applied ED. I've heard it all before, and like I already said, this EFC came as a surprise.

You should email the office directly and ask. I had to waive my noncustodial parent and they understood. But you should def ask them directly. Good Luck!

Yeah, I’m going to call on Monday. Which office do you think, financial aid or admissions?

Also, surely I’m not the only ED applicant who appealed their aid. Has anyone else had any experience with this?

Call financial aid. Admissions is done with us ED acceptees.
