ED/EA Question

This seems like a really simple question but I couldn't find an accurate answer after searching through this website: can a student apply to one school ED and other schools EA? Or does ED mean one can't apply EA elsewhere?

Yes. There are a few exceptions and a few caveats. For example, Georgetown doesn’t allow applicants to EA to Georgetown if they’re also applying ED somewhere else. Also, if you’re accepted anywhere ED and your EA results have yet to come out, you must withdraw your EA applications.

Since you asked two questions and CallMeJonah said yes only, I’ll clarify his answer: YES, you may apply ED and EA to other schools simultaneously (besides the GTown exception which CMJ notes very thoughtfully for you).

Just to add, there are other schools with restrictive early action policies. For example, I believe that HYP have single-choice early action that only allows you to apply to non-privates. It’s important to check for each school.

Check the requirement and restriction for each school. In general, ED or REA(SCEA) would block you from applying other ED/EA of private schools but you may still do EA to public schools.

^^ HYPS have non-binding EA that allows you to apply concurrently to non-binding EA at public schools but not at other private schools. Of course they allow you to apply to any school you like, including any private school, in the RD cycle.

It’s best to check with the individual schools on your list and your guidance counselor, as they must sign the ED agreement as well, which states
