I've heard both. Is ED easier or harder than RD? As in the both the % accepted and applicant pool.

I thought it should be easier? especially because Washu has a low yield

I am sure a lot depends on the year and applicant pool. ED might be more difficult if the applicant pool is unusually strong one year. Even though the acceptance rate might be higher, the applicants are much stronger than many in RD.

Really? I thought the theory was that most who apply to Washu also apply to Ivies, so they wouldnt do ED…making it easier? Also, the yield for Washu is quite low

You are right for the most part. I just meant that if the ED applicant pool was abnormally strong one year, then it would be difficult. Hopefully not this year though I am still debating whether or not to apply ED.

Also, I heard that WashU admissions officers are predicting an ED acceptance rate of less than 20% this year?! Not sure how reliable this number is but the odds are still small.

exceptional students usually won’t apply to Washu for ED…
a kid who got into WASHU ED fro my school had 3.7 UW GPA, 32 ACT…

and people with better GPA and better SAT scores were waitlisted for regular decision…

WashU’s low yield rate: why I was on the line about whether to apply there or not. I’ve heard that they don’t accept students they think are “too good” to want to attend there.

Nina, where did you get that number from? Was it a reliable source? That seems very low, even for WashU…it makes me worry.

Some person I met on campus. However, that person was not a student or faculty member so that number is probably not 100% reliable. Nonetheless, the rumors are out there. And also, on a recent visit a faculty member (not admissions faculty though) said that someone who is accepted ED would have probably been accepted RD as well…not sure if I believe that.

@chrome16:
I think that might be true if the student hasn’t shown any interest in the school. It is really hard to prove one way or the other, but WashU wants to accept students who are at least somewhat interested in attending.

Thanks, nina. But how do we show interest other than clicking on the links they send us in the mail and visiting STL?

chrome - visiting is the big one, but also applying for scholarships, having an interview, etc.

^Thanks for the answer, esp. the interview part. Though I’m not sure if I’ll be able to do interviews for even half of the schools I’m applying to.
