ED II ---- Chance of getting into TISCH | Low GPA and SAT but strong portfolio

Hi all, I’m an international student currently studying in U.S high school.

I have a very low GPA, Weighted 3.3, UW 3.0 probably. SAT score is also below average, 1350, 600 Reading & 750 Math.

However, I have very strong portfolio, activities, and essays. The film I submitted for my portfolio was officially selected by several big film festival, including D.C Independent Film Festival, LA CineFest, Miami Independent Film Festival. (I have a strong sense it gonna gets some awards at end).

Previous working experience in film industry (screenwriting for two big national projects). The another film I did two years ago received Best Script prize by Chinese Foreign Affair Ministry. Also, I have lead the school team in a international business competition; started first Free Hug activity in my city, and did LGBT community service.

My essays are also pretty strong, compared to students who was admitted by Tisch last year. My peers and teachers said they were the best essays they have seen this year.

So wondering if anyone can give a guess my chance of getting into Tisch please? Thanks.

Not much value to my opinion but I have heard that if Tisch really wants you, they can fight for you with admissions and will win some. Your grades and SAT score are not soooo low and the rest of your application sounds quite impressive. Good luck!

Your issue is in your gpa. Your SAT score is good enough. Part of what admissions will look at are the difficulty of the courses you have taken. 50% of your application is based on your portfolio. The other 50% is based on the input of admissions, which will take into account grades, test scores, letters of recommendation, essays and ec’s.

If you feel your total package that admissions will review is strong, and your portfolio is well received, then you have a real shot still.

Good luck

@harvester Thank you! I somehow might heard if students are applying for Tisch, then it is Tisch department reviewing their applications instead of the general admission office? Is that true?

@uskoolfish Thanks! I have taken 3 AP courses in my Sophomore year and JR Year. I got A- on AP Physics I, B on AP Calc AB and AP Microeconomics. I have confidence on my every part of application except grades and gpa (compare to other Asian students). My intern supervisor, who is an indie famous filmmaker, is also writing RL for me. Hope my portfolio and other parts of materials delivered well…

Also, I took another SAT test on Jan. 21st, just in case if NYU deferred me into RD because of my grades.

I think the general admissions office DOES still review Tisch applications.
