ED II vs. Regular Decision?

Ok I need some help here.

Bowdoin is my top choice. So I want to go ED II (last minute, I know), since, technically, percentage of acceptance is higher than regular decision. This seems like a pretty obvious way to go, to me… first choice = Early Decision, no?

However.

I met with the Cross Country coach (I will be running on the team if accepted- I currently rank in about the middle of the team) and he actually discouraged me from going ED II, saying it could work against me. So I’m a rich white kid from Massachusetts, which apparently everybody (Bowdoin included) absolutely detests. He said that Bowdoin uses its ED’s to fill its “diversity quota”, and since I’m not a minority, from a lesser-represented state, or a state champion runner, it may work against me, and regular decision would be a safer bet.

So I’m in quite a pickle at the moment.

Any opinions??

Thanks a bunch!

Please, anyone at all have an opinion about ED II vs. regular decision???

i'm not sure how exactly it would work against you. the coach's explanation provides no reason for why it may harm you, even though you aren't a diversity admit. you may want to call the admissions office and ask them candidly if an early decision II application is viewed with skepticism. if you're being recruited, however, you should follow the coach's instructions. he knows more about the admissions process at bowdoin than we do.

I've never heard of that they use ED to fill the minority quota. That's sort of an awful thing from him to tell you.

And Bowdoin doesn't detest WASPs from MA. They made up 20% of the incoming class of 2011. Check out Bowdoin's Enrollment Facts.

if youre being recruited the coach would want you to be ED. so i guess youre not being recruited....

umm well I did EDII. Go for it because if you think you're a strong applicant there's no reason not to.
