What's the difference between ED I and ED II? Does applying ED II minimize chances of being accepted?

Hey Aquafoam:

Some schools have ED II because sometimes people don't know yet which is their first-choice school by the ED I Nov. deadline; so it gives kids a chance to think about it a little more. Also, some kids who know by the Nov. deadline that they want to apply to a school ED but want to have the chance to include either higher SAT scores or really good first-semester senior year grades will apply ED II instead. Finally, some kids will use ED II if they didn't get into their first-choice school through EA or ED I, but know that a certain school is their definite second-choice.

According to Tufts admissions, the ED I applicant pool is nearly identical to the ED II applicant pool, so I don't think it's easier or harder to get in through ED I or II. So ED II certainly doesn't "minimize chances of being accepted"; instead, it gives you the same advantage ED I gives you over RD, because you're letting Tufts know that you will commit yourself to coming here if they accept you.
